Aptiva - System will not stay powered on/off or problems with POST

Applicable to: United States

If you are experiencing problems with getting your system to beep or POST, this usually occurs after going inside the computer to add an Option or upgrade.

Please check the following locations for loose connections according to symptom:

1. For Aptiva Axx and Mxx models which do not power off:
Check the connector labeled P1. (The green indicator light will stay on all the time.) However, if the
power switch is depressed and held, the hard drive and fan will power up with no POST.

2. For Aptiva Axx and Mxx models which do not POST:
Check the connector labeled P11. The computer's green indicator light will come on when power button is pressed and the fan will turn, but the CD ROM, and Hard Drives will not have power. The System will also not POST.

3. For Aptiva Axx and Mxx models which POST with 1 long 3 short and 1 long beeps:
Memory is missing, in the wrong order, in wrong combination, or loose. Verify that you have 2 identical SIMMS in speed and size installed right beside one-another.

Other things to check:

Service Level A - Cxx J30 Power Supply Aux. 3-pin connector
Service Level A - Cxx J24 Power Supply 3-pin connector
Service Level I - Axx J30 Power Supply 3-pin connector
Service Level I - Axx J16 Power Supply 3-pin connector
Service Level H - Mxx J30 Power Supply 3-pin connector
Service Level H - Mxx J16 Power Supply 3-pin connector

You will see a cable with three wires (Red black and White) which connect to the system board. This location has a jacket that
goes around the connector on the motherboard. If this Jacket is pulled up, for example by pulling on the cable installing another
component, the result will be a machine with a momentary jolt of power, then the machine will power off.

Ironically, this jacket's purpose is to prevent the cable from pulling off from the motherboard. Keep in mind it's fairly hard to
CAUSE this to happen. But it can and has occurred.

Simply pushing down on this connector rather firmly, has failed to make an adequate connection. It is strongly recommended
that the cable be removed the from the socket completely and then push down on the jacket. As much as 7 pounds of pressure
may be necessary to push this jacket down. After this is done, and the connector replaced, the unit will power itself on.
