TP General - Mwave or ACP modem does not work in Windows 95 Restart in MS-DOS mode

SYMPTOM:
Mwave or ACP modem does not work in Windows 95 Restart in MS-DOS mode.
CONFIGURATION:
Any system running Windows 95 that uses either a MWave card or the Advanced Communications Processor.
ThinkPad 755CD,CE,CDV,CSE,CV, some models of the 755CX
ThinkPad 760C,CD,E,ED,XD
ThinkPad 765D
ThinkPad 770 models with built in modem, 770ED
SOLUTION:
If you use "Exit to DOS Mode" in Windows 95 with the setting "Specify a NEW MS-DOS Configuration," (as the preload does) some DOS modem applications (including the DOS command "echo") may not work because the COM port is not set up in the BIOS data area (this is done through Windows 95.) If a DOS application has the ability to be configured to a specific I/O range and IRQ (such as DOS ProComm), the application will work in this mode.
If you use "Exit to DOS Mode" in Windows 95 with the setting "Use CURRENT MS-DOS configuration", Windows 95 drops straight to DOS Mode. In this configuration, the COM port has been set up by Windows 95, and so the DOS modem should work.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
To change "Exit to DOS Mode" from "Specify a NEW MS-DOS Configuration" to "Use CURRENT MS-DOS configuration", use the following steps:
- Go to Windows Explorer
- Select the Windows subdirectory
- Right click on the Exit To DOS file and select Properties from the resulting pop-up menu
- Select the Program tab
- Select the Advanced button
- Select the "Use current MS-DOS configuration"
Check that the Mwave driver is in the config.sys file.
For systems that use Mwave audio (Thinkpad 755/760/765), use the DOS FASTCFG utility to select DOS MODEM support.
