If you are very familiar with SCSI, hardware, and the installation process, continue with section 3.0. If not, continue with 4.0 Detailed installation instructions.

3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users
1. Run the System Configuration Utility diskette to set up the server and ensure that the MP Spec is set to 1.4.

2. Reset the Adaptec controllers to default settings and low level format all hard drives.

3. Boot from the Windows NT installation diskettes and specify the mass storage devices for the embedded Adaptec controllers using the appropriate downloaded diskettes (See section 1.0, 7800 Family Manager Set).

4. Complete the Windows NT installation normally, using Network Interface card (NIC) drivers supplied with the NIC hardware or downloaded from the manufacturer.

Note: Windows NT Service Pack 3 is required for proper functioning of NT components. (SP3 is provided with your
ServerGuide CD set, or is available as a download from Microsoft.)

4.0 Detailed installation instructions
Follow the instructions below in sequence:

4.1 Setting up the BIOS
Note: Follow the on screen directions on the following disk operations:

Boot to the BIOS upgrade diskette (listed in section 2.0) and flash the system to revision 14.

4.2 Setting up the hardware
Running the System Configuration Utility (SCU) Diskette on the 704 Server:

1. Boot from the SCU Diskette.

2. Select #1, Execute AMI SCU, then press Enter at the logo screen.

3. Select Step #3, Change Configuration Settings.

4. Select System Board. Under MP Spec Version set to MP Spec v1.4.

5. Press Esc to return to the Main Menu. Select Step #4, Save Configuration.

6. When the save is complete, Select Step #6, Exit. Press Enter at the next screen.

4.3 Setting up the Adaptec SCSI subsystem
Note: For open bay models or any SCSI chain setup issues, download Faxback document # 33050 from 800-426-3395.

1. Boot the server and press Ctrl A when prompted on the screen to enter SCSI Select.

2. Select Configure/View Host Adapter Settings.

3. Press F6 to restore defaults. Select yes to reset all options to default. Open SCSI device configuration, on the lines which say Send Start Unit Command set all IDs for active hard disks to yes.

4. Press Esc twice. Choose Yes to save any changes which are made.

5. Select SCSI Disk Utilities (A SCSI bus scan should occur).

6. For each hard drive that appears in the list perform the following:
a. Highlight the drive.
b. Select Format Disk. (Note: A status bar does not appear. Allow to run until complete.)

4.4 Installing the NOS
Note: There are two revisions of standard Windows NT Boot diskettes. The older variety stops and allows skipping of mass storage device detection, the other does not. To simplify the procedure, using the F6 key is used with either type.

1. Create new Windows NT boot diskettes from the CD by either using a DOS CD-ROM boot diskette, or reading the NT CD from another machine. Do this by changing into the i386 directory and execute WINNT /OX from DOS, 95, or OS/2 machines, or WINNT32 /OX from another NT machine. Using the shrink-wrap diskettes may work, however they may cause an error after the first boot in the installation.

2. Boot from the first Windows NT boot diskette. Be ready to hold down the F6 key until the keyboard buffer beeps when you
see a black screen that says NT is detecting your hardware (if your diskettes react differently, merely hold F6 while booting the first diskette.)

3. The diskettes will boot normally. At some point the install will go to mass storage device detection. There are two possible screens; follow the instruction for what you see:

a. NT is about to detect your mass storage device. If you see this, press S to skip.

b. NT has detected the following mass storage devices: If you see this, it MUST be followed by NONE. If this is not the case, reboot again and remember to hold down F6 (Step 2). This must say NONE; if it is blank or has a list, you must repeat Step 2.

4. You will now select S to specify your mass storage devices. Select Other and use the appropriate diskettes for the following controllers. The onboard Adaptec is installed using the 7800 Family Manager set, Disk 1 of 2 (supplied with server, or see section 1.0). If one is installed, an IDE CD-ROM must be specified from NT's own list. It is the only selection that has the words IDE and ATAPI in its description (e.g. PCI IDE CD-ROM, (ATAPI 1.2 compliant)).

5. The next step may also vary per the version of the boot diskettes. Windows NT will provide a means to partition and format
the installation target partition. NT should not have a problem setting a 2-4GB partition on this disk. If it does, a DOS or Windows 95 boot diskette can create the partition and can also format it FAT up to 2GB (DO NOT ALLOW FAT 32). Issues with the install and extended BIOS translation cause any problems which may occur (e.g. being able to only create a 1GB partition). Extended BIOS translation is set by default on the Adaptec controller. Also, any warnings about partition sizes greater than 1024 cylinders may be ignored. Recommended file system for the system root partition is NTFS.

6. File copy will now occur. When complete, the system will prompt to reboot to the hard drive. If after this reboot the system does not find an operating system, repeat step 1 and create the boot diskettes. The graphical portion of the install will now proceed. Follow on screen directions for your desired configuration. When specifying the Network Interface Card (NIC) driver, use only downloaded or supplied NIC drivers from the manufacturer.

7. NT is now installed. WARNING: Service Pack 3 is required for proper functioning of NT networking. Apply SP3 (provided with ServerGuide or available as a download from Microsoft). When SP3 detects newer or other manufacturer's files, you MUST select No or No to all (e.g. DO NOT OVERWRITE).

Appendix A: Installing Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3
Note: You will need about 75MB of free disk space to unpack the Service Pack.

1. Insert the ServerGuide FixPak CD that contains Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 3 into the CD-ROM drive, or download the Service Pack onto your hard disk drive (be sure to select the 128-bit version if you are using the U.S./Canadian version of Windows NT).

2. Run the file from a command prompt, or from an explore window, locate NT4SP3_I.EXE on the CD.

3. Press Enter on the NT4SP3_I.EXE Service Pack Setup window to begin the installation.

4. Agree to the license and press Enter.

5. Select to create or not to create an Uninstall directory; then, press Enter twice to continue.

6. The Service Pack is then copied to your system.

7. If any message appears asking if you want to replace a newer or other manufacturer's file, select No to All.

8. After the installation is complete, click OK or press Enter to restart (reboot) the server.
