Aptiva - 2153 Recovery instructions

BEFORE YOU START

It is important you back up any information you wish to keep from your hard drive onto floppy diskette before administering the following instructions. Any files or additional software you have saved to your hard disk drive will be deleted during the recovery process.

By proceeding with these instructions it is assumed that you understand the hard drive on your Aptiva will be formatted and only the preloaded original software will be installed on your computer. Any additional software and the files you have saved to floppy diskette can be reloaded after the recovery is complete.

Insert the red Aptiva Product Recovery CD into the CD-ROM drive

Restart your computer. If you are currently in Windows 98, use the correct shutdown procedure.

The following message will be displayed on the screen;

Do you wish to update the Aptiva software on your hard disk (Y/N)?

Type N

You will now be at a flashing prompt. Type fdisk then press Enter

You will now have a long message on your screen. The last line reads;

Do you wish to enable large disk support (Y/N) enter [Y]

Press Enter

You will now be at the Fdisk menu. Select number 3 - to delete a partition then press Enter

Select number 1 - Delete Primary DOS Partition then press Enter

Select number 1 and press Enter

Enter the volume label EXACTLY as it appears listed at the top of your screen then press Enter

Type Y and then press Enter

Press Esc three times

Turn your computer off directly from the power point at the wall. Leave off for 10 seconds then restart.

The following message will be displayed on the screen;

Do you wish to update the Aptiva software on your hard disk (Y/N)?

Press Y

You must read and agree to the license conditions

The following message will now be displayed on the screen;

Preparing Disk...

Your hard disk is not partitioned. Do you want me to partition it (Y/N)?

Type Y

Partition complete. I am going to reboot now.

Press any key to continue.

Press Enter

The following message will be displayed on the screen;

Do you wish to update the Aptiva software on your hard disk (Y/N)?

Press Y

You must read and agree to the license conditions

The following message will now be displayed on the screen;

Preparing Disk...

The recovery process has now begun. First the computer will format the hard drive. You will then see files inflating and extracting while scrolling on the left hand side of the screen. This process will take approximately 50 minutes.

The following message will then be displayed on the screen;

Installation complete!

Remove the Aptiva Product Recovery CD and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart.

Remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive

Restart your computer by pressing Ctrl and Alt and Delete at the same time, or by using the on/off button on the system unit

When the computer restarts, a screen will appear with the following message;

If you want to learn how to use the mouse, or if you need to brush up on your skill, type M to begin the mouse lesson.

Or Press the ESC key to exit the Tutorial

Press Y,to confirm exiting the tutorial

At the Regional Settings screen select the proper region

Click on Next

At the Keyboard Layout screen select the default setting of United States 101 by clicking on Next
Enter the name of the owner of the computer at the User Info screen in the text box.
Click on Next

Read the License Agreement on the next screen carefully.

If you accept the agreement click on accept. If you do not accept the agreement click on disagree
(If you choose disagree the installation will not continue and you will be exited to a command prompt)

Click on I accept the agreement then click on Next

Enter your Certificate of Authenticity exactly as it appears on the green label pasted to the Windows 98 booklet you received with your Computer. This number starts AFTER the words æProduct ID:Æ. Ensure to enter all spaces and æ-Æ as it appears on the booklet.

Click Next then Click Finish then Click OK

The computer will now restart.

When your PC restarts, type your name in the space provided, but do NOT type a password, unless you wish to enter it EVERY time you start windows. click OK

The system will now install devices, this may take a few minutes.

Select the Time Zone that you are located in from the list provided, then click on Close, or select Apply, then OK

The ôAdd Printer Wizardö window will appear

It is best to leave the installation of printer software till after Windows has finished setting up

Click Cancel to leave the installation of your printer till later

The computer will then restart.

Once the computer has restarted, the æWelcome to Windows 98Æ box will appear.

Click on the X in the top right-hand corner of the window.

You will now be presented with the windows desktop

Double Click Your Aptiva Adventure Start Here!

A screen will appear with the following message;

Welcome to your new Aptiva!

Your Adventure begins by creating your custom Aptiva desktop
(just 1 step and a few minutes)

If youÆve opened programs before opening "Your Aptiva Adventure Starts Here", close them now before you continue. (Check the task bar below to make sure it shows only "Start" and the "Your Aptiva Adventure ... " program).

Select Continue

First... Please tell us where you will use this Aptiva computer.

Select Home, Office or School

A screen will appear with the following message;

One more step before youÆre ready to live the Aptiva Adventure!

This last step installs these features on your desktop:

-Aptiva Theme
-Norton AntiVirus
-Ring Central

If you want to remove these features later, you can uninstall them using the Aptiva Installer program.

Select Continue

While the computer is installing the software, the follow message will appear;

Countdown to living the Aptiva adventure!

Installing now ...

The computer will install the programs on to your hard drive. This process will take about 5 minutes.

The computer will then restart
