Aptiva 2168 - Voice Type Dictation tips

Applicable to: World-Wide

Question:
What are some tips when using Voice Type Dictation on an Aptiva 2168-M70?

Answer:
The microphone that ships with M70 is the Voice Type Noise Canceling microphone. It can be used either as a close talking 'headset' microphone or as a 'desktop' omni directional microphone. There is a switch that changes modes. When you dictate and navigate you should use it in its headset mode (switched to B). When you just want to use it for voice annotation or with Windows Voice Control, you may use it in its desktop mode (switched to A).

The Voice Type Warp navigator does not require training to use because it is speaker independent. However, if you do train it will be more accurate. Keep in mind that you can do the Voice Type Dictation enrollment a little at a time. You can suspend the enrollment, then resume later on at the same point.

When you finish, make sure that you backup the enrollment data to a diskette. Then you can restore it if you ever loose it.

Steps to BACKUP your Enrollment:
1. Double-click on the "ENROLLMENT" icon in the Voice Type Dictation window.
2. Click on "EXISTING USER" and select the user name in the top panel.
3. Select "BACKUP" on the right hand side.
4. Follow the prompts until the backup is complete.

Steps to RESTORE your Enrollment:
1. You must have an enrollment in progress to select the restore option. Start a temporary enrollment.
2. Double-click on "ENROLLMENT". Click on "NEW USER". Insert a temporary user name i.e.. test setup. Click on "CONTINUE". Click on "OK", then click on "SUSPEND". Now click on "DONE". This will install the temporary name user id so that you can then restore your original enrollment backup.
3. Once the enrollment is started, select "RESTORE".
4. You can delete the temporary enrollment if you wish after the restore has completed.

The Microphone and Voice Type Dictation:
Make sure your microphone switch is set to position B. You can not enroll and dictate with the switch set to A. Position B is the
'headset' position. In this position the microphone should be about 1/2 inch from the corner of your mouth.

After enrollment:
When you first try dictation, use the "Quick Dictation" window, as it is easier to use. To start, read from the printed training text.
Read only one or two lines of text. Stop dictation and make corrections then do more. Repeat this cycle until you are
comfortable with it. It is important you understand how to use the Dictation Window and make corrections. This is where you
will continue training new words and correct words you already trained but do not produce good results.
