PCMCIA 8X-20X CD-ROM Drive - Error messages in Event Viewer under Windows NT
Applicable to: World-Wide
Symptom:
This issue involves the 8X-20X CD-ROM Drive, marketing part number 1969010. When running Windows NT 4.0 on a ThinkPad 560X, after loading audio drivers for the IBM 8X-20X portable CD-ROM, a message comes up with Event ID23 "description for event ID23 in source cs32ba11 could not be found". It contains the following insertion string "cs32ba11 device\wsswaveout0.translated." This error comes up twice and then the same error with 'cd20xrnt device \scsi1.translated' as insert string. Both sound and CD-ROM appear to work fine, but the error messages are troubling. When the CD-ROM is disconnected, event viewer comes up without error messages.
Explanation:
The Option CD-ROM device driver was designed to install in Windows NT as an Option. The resource assignment for the CD-ROM completely depends on the NT resource management. It means the driver and the drive don't have any candidate for the resources and expect that NT gives the driver available resources. The error is created by defeating the driver's intelligence. A resource problem is occurring and Windows NT is handling the conflict by reallocating resources. Windows NT is then reporting to the driver that reallocation has occurred and the driver does not know how to handle the message being sent. An event viewer message is then logged.
Resolution:
The ThinkPad should be loaded with all supported ThinkPad drivers prior to the installation of Options CD-ROMs.
