TP 770 - Clarification of ECA002 for the ThinkPad 770

Because of confusion about the purpose and application of this ECA please be aware of this additional information:
1. This fail only occurs when additional SDRAM has been added to the system. This ECA will not fix any problem that occurs when both DIMM slots are empty. Before telling any customer that their problem will be fixed by this ECA, a test must be done to ensure that the symptom only occurs when the added memory is present. This test will also rule out possible defective SDRAM memory itself.
2. Our data indicates that even when additional SDRAM is added, the approximate number of systems that fail is 5%. Most systems never fail for this problem. Some customers would prefer not to have the ECA applied at all because the benefit may not out weigh the inconvenience of having service.
3. To identify systems that have not been removed from the original shipping box, look at the label on the box. ThinkPad 770Ęs built after 2/20/98 already have this ECA applied at the factory.
4. The intention of this fix is to apply it when a system fails. As an additional quality improvement action, IBM has approved adding this ECA on every system that is in for service, even when the service is not related to this failure.
5. Because of the low percentage of failures, this fix does not need to be applied to all systems (this is not a mandatory rework or recall of any kind). Also since the expected fail rate is low, please use caution before setting a customer expectation that this ECA will definitely fix their problem.
