56K PC Card Modem/Cellular Capable - Procedure for using with cellular phones

Applicable to: United States

There have been reports of problems with multiple cellular phones either shutting off or disconnecting when trying to make a connection with the 56K PC Card Modem/Cellular Capable (02K4196). In these cases make sure that the following steps have been taken:

1. Make sure the appropriate cellular phone cable, from 3Com, is being used. The cable can be ordered by calling 1-800-846-2233 (in the U.S.) or 1-800-454-9496 (in Canada). The model number for the cable is XJ5560.

2. Make sure the modem has been updated using the V.90 update file, v9ibm556.exe. This file is available on the BBS/Web Site.

3. Using Hyperterminal see if manual dialing is possible through the cell phone by using the Connection Order steps below:

Connection Order

1.

Cell Phone turned off, cable disconnected from phone and modem.

2.

Insert modem (If not already in place).

3.

Open communications software (ex. steps below are for use with Hyperterminal in Win95/NT).

a. Open Hyperterminal Folder and double click on Hypertrm (Start-Programs-Accessories).

b. Enter name of test and click ok.

c. Enter bogus phone number (ex. 1234) ,verify connect using is IBM 56K PC Card, click ok.

d. Click cancel, should now be on the blank terminal screen.

4.

Issue AT&F and press enter. If modem is responding correctly, you should get "OK" on the next line.

5.

Connect cell cable to phone, then connect to modem.

6.

Should get message in software that cable was detected (will state which type of phone and cable were detected, ie Motorolla, Nokia, etc. ex. "Motorolla Cable detected").

7.

Turn phone on.

8.

Issue ATDT + phone number (ex. ATDT19195170001) and press enter. Should hear the modem dial out at this point and connect.

If this works, the cable and modem are functioning correctly (goto step 4 below). If it does not work, the problem could be the cable, modem, or phone. Check to see if there is a power saving feature on the phone that can be disabled or extended. If this still doesn't work, the modem may need to be replaced.

4. Go into the modem options of his connection and enable a terminal window before dialing. This can be done by the following steps (Note: these steps are for changing a Dial-Up Networking session, if using another application, refer to the appropriate software support):

Enable Terminal before dial

1.

Right click on the connection icon and select properties.

2.

Choose configure button from below modem listing.

3.

Click on the options tab.

4.

Place a check in the box beside "Bring up terminal window before dialing" and then click ok.

5. At this point, when the icon is double-clicked to launch the connection, a blank terminal window will come up. Follow steps 1,2,5,6, and 7 in Connection Order section above to get the phone ready to dial. After step 7 above, hit the continue button and the phone should dial out.

Note: If it does dial out at this point, but there are issues with connectivity, contact the software support, ISP, or cellular provider for issues relating to modem use over cellular phones. Once it dials out and connects...the modem hardware is functioning properly.

If problems are experienced after executing the above steps call (800) 772-2227.

Note: These steps can also be used with the 33.6 X-Jack PC Card (55H6759). The only difference is that there is no v.90 update and model number referenced to 3Com should be XJ4336.
