Aptiva - Backing up software

Applicable to: World-Wide

Service Information:
The following applies if your model does not have a bootable CD:
One of the first things that should be done with your new Aptiva is to ensure that you have backups of the software on your system just in case anything gets deleted or corrupted when you are using it. If you have a multimedia system, this will have been supplied with a Recovery CD-ROM which already contains the backups.

In either case, whether you have multimedia machine or not, a recovery diskette will have to be made in order to access your backups/system should anything go seriously wrong with your system software making it impossible to start your machine from the hard disk. This diskette will contain the system files required to boot the machine up and also several programs allowing you to get your system up and running again. When you need to restore all your original software you will need to put the diskette in the machine before you turn it on, turn the machine on and then follow the on screen instructions.

You can make a recovery diskette in Windows :-
1. From the PROGRAM MANAGER screen click on APTIVAWARE.
2. Click on CUSTOM TOOLS.
3. Click on CREATE RECOVERY DISKETTE and follow the on screen instructions.

CUSTOM TOOLS is also where you make the BACKUP diskettes for all the original software on your Aptiva as well. Simply click on BACKUP & RESTORE and then follow the on screen instructions (you will need about 23 diskettes). If you cannot access windows the following maybe helpful:-
1. There is recovery directory on your hard drive that can be used to restore files. This directory contains 'disk images' of the backup diskettes.
2. The recovery diskette can be made by being in the recovery directory (on the hard disk or CD-ROM) and typing LOADDSKF_RECOVERY.IMG_A:
