Aptiva - Aptiva Desktop Customization

Introduction:
The items described here are just a few of the exciting features that Aptiva provides to enhance your computing experience. Dancing icons, spinning launch effects, and informative bubble help, make the Aptiva come alive.
Aptiva Desktop Customization features:
- Show bubble help on desktop icons
- Highlight desktop icons when the mouse pointer passes over them (i.e. flyover)
- Show special visual effects when launching desktop icons
- Replace your static desktop icons with animated icons
- Place an Aptiva Desktop Customization icon in the System Tray for easy customization access
- Turn On or Off the display of shortcut overlays on shortcut icons
- Turn On or Off the Windows 95 animation effects when minimizing or restoring a window
NOTE: Aptiva Desktop Customization is designed to work with Microsoft Windows 95 only. Some shells that run concurrently with Windows 95 may cause the Aptiva Desktop Customization to malfunction. If this happens you may choose to turn off Aptiva Customization features by removing it from the Startup folder in the Start Menu and restarting Windows 95.
USING APTIVA DESKTOP CUSTOMIZATION: This section will explain how to tailor the Aptiva desktop into your own unique desktop.
I. Starting Aptiva Desktop Customization:
1. Select the AptivaWare folder icon on your desktop.
2. Select the Aptiva Desktop Enhancements folder icon.
3. Select the Aptiva Desktop Customization program icon.
You can close the Aptiva Desktop Customization screen after tailoring your desktop. The effects will continue as long as you do not stop the effects as described in the Stopping Aptiva Desktop Customization Effects section.
II. Running Aptiva Desktop Customization Effects at Startup
Your Aptiva is preloaded with the Aptiva Desktop Customization features automatically running at system startup. This is accomplished by placing the Aptiva Desktop Effects program in the Startup folder located under the Programs section of the Windows 95 Start Menu. If it has been removed from the Startup folder, drag and drop the Aptiva Desktop Effects icon back into the Startup folder.
III. Stopping Aptiva Desktop Customization Effects
1. Locate the Aptiva Desktop Customization icon in the System tray (resting the mouse pointer over an icon in the system tray provides descriptive text on the program the icon represents). Click the right mouse button on the icon to activate a menu that allows you to exit the Aptiva Desktop Effects.
2. Using the Aptiva Desktop Customization Icon in the System tray. The Windows 95 System tray is located on the Start bar to the far right. Your Aptiva comes with the time displayed in the System tray. Locate the Aptiva Desktop Customization icon in the System tray (passing the mouse pointer over an icon in the System tray provides descriptive text on the program the icon represents). Click the left mouse button on the icon to show the Aptiva Desktop Customization screen. Click the right mouse button on the icon to activate a menu that allows you to exit the Aptiva Desktop Effects which will stop the Aptiva Desktop Customization features.
IV. Customizing Your Desktop Features
The Aptiva Desktop Customization screen displays the features available for changing the look of your desktop. To start Aptiva Desktop Customization:
1. From the AptivaWare folder, Click Aptiva Desktop Enhancements
2. Click Aptiva Desktop Customization
3. To activate a feature, Click its check box. The features you can activate are:
a.) Turn on Bubble Help
Displays bubble help when the mouse pointer rests on a desktop icon.
b.) Highlight Icons on Flyover
Highlights desktop icons when the mouse pointer passes over them (i.e. flyover)
c.) Turn on Visual Launch Effects
Shows special visual effects when launching desktop icons. Use the Choose button to select the effect you desire. The Choose Launch Effect screen displays the choices and demonstrates the chosen effect. Click on the desired effect.
Pivot..............................................Turns the icon vertically
Flip.................................................Turns the icon horizontally
Squash..........................................Flattens the icon like a tin can
Move Up.......................................Launches the icon like a rocket
Click on the OK button to make the change, or the Cancel button to close the screen without any changes.
d.) Animate Icons
When checked, this feature turns on animating icons that were provided with your Aptiva or those that you have chosen. Use the Choose button to customize your desktop with animating icons of your choice.
The Choose Icon To Animate screen displays the desktop icons that you may replace with an animated icon.
i. Scroll the window to find the desktop icon to be replaced with an animated icon.
ii. Select the icon and click on the Choose Animation button. The "Choose Icon Animation" screen is displayed which shows a library of animated icons
iii. Scroll the window to find the animated icon you wish to select. When you select an animated icon it will preview in the Preview box.
iv. To replace the desktop icon with the selected animated icon, click on the Apply button.
e. Place Aptiva Desktop Customization in System Tray
When checked, a Aptiva Desktop Customization icon is placed in the System tray for easy customization access. Once the icon is in the System tray, use a left mouse click to display the Aptiva Desktop Customization screen or a right mouse click to stop the Aptiva customization effects.
f. Animate Windows on Minimize/Restore
Aptiva provides easy control of the Windows 95 minimize/restore animation effects.
g. Show Shortcut Overlays
Aptiva provides easy control of the Windows 95 shortcut overlay display. Turning this feature off removes the Windows 95 overlay icon (the Windows 95 default shortcut overlay is a small arrow) from your shortcut icons.
4. Selecting the OK button will save your changes and close the display. The Cancel button closes the display without changes.
V. Uninstalling Aptiva Desktop Customization
The Aptiva Installer can be used to remove Aptiva Desktop Customization features from your computer.
1. Double click on the Aptiva Installer icon on the desktop.
2. Click on the Installed Programs tab at the top of the Aptiva Installer.
3. Click on Aptiva Desktop Customization.
4. Click "Remove".
