IBM IntelliStation Z Pro (Type 6865) - Product Recovery CD fails to reload

SYMPTOM:
While attempting to reload the preloaded software on the IntelliStation Z Pro using the Product Recovery CD, the installation fails or loops.

RESOLUTION:
Perform the following procedure in order to recover your software.

PROCEDURE:
NOTE: You will need a 2.0MB 3.5" Diskette in addition to the Product Recovery CD to complete this procedure.

Before you start you need to make sure your machine's startup sequence is set to boot from the 3.5" diskette drive first, then the CD-ROM, then your hard disk. Here's a brief summary of how to do this;

Power on your machine and press F1 when you see the IBM logo (There is a message at the bottom of this screen that says "Press F1 to go to the Setup Utility".).When the Setup Utility menu appears select 'Startup Options' by using the up and down arrow keys until it is highlighted and press the enter key. Then select 'Start Sequence'. On this page you need to make sure the settings in the "Primary Startup Sequence Section ..." are set to the following values:

First Startup Device Diskette Drive 0
Second Startup Device CD ROM
Third Startup Device Hard disk 0

When you are finished, press the Esc key 3 times and select "Yes, save and exit the Setup Utility".

1. Boot the machine with the CD-ROM inserted like you would for a regular recovery. At the first prompt that asks you if you want to restore your system reply 'N'. This brings you to a DOS prompt.

2. Insert a 3.5" diskette into the drive and type the following command;
G:\RECOVERY\US\LOADDSKF G:\RECOVERY\US\RECOVERY.IMG B: /Q /Y (This creates a bootable diskette.)

3. When the previous step has finished rename the file INSTUK.SCR on the diskette to INSTUS.SCR by entering the following command:
RENAME B:\INSTUK.SCR INSTUS.SCR

4. Reboot the machine with the 3.5" diskette and the Recovery CD-ROM still in the machine and then follow the on-screen instructions as you would for a regular recovery.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Once the recovery process has completed, and booting to the IBM Preload, you may get errors in the event log. Check Event log and any drivers that failed to load, use the Product RTC to build/load the failing driver.

In some cases you may have to low level format the HDD before above process works properly.
