Aptiva - Supported CD media types
Applicable to: World-Wide
The CD-ROM Drives in Aptiva computers support the following types of CD's:
Standard Audio (Music)
PC CD-ROM (usually just called CD-ROM). These are CD's that hold data. Most programs today are on data CD's.
VideoCD (also called White Book). These have "Compact Disc Digital Video" on the CD label.
CD-I (also called Green Book) are labeled "Compact Disc Interactive." This is a proprietary Phillips format and will not work on personal computers. There are also combination VideoCD/CD-I CD's. The VideoCD portion of these CD's should work.
CD-R. These are "CD-Recordable." These are write-once CD's that require a special drive to create. They can be read by a standard CD-ROM drive.
DVD is becoming more and more popular. Selected Aptiva models have DVD-ROM drives instead of CD-ROM drives. There are currently two types of DVD-ROM Drives:
DVD-1: This was the first DVD to be released. It supports all of the above CD's EXCEPT CD-R. It also will read data and movie DVD's. Special hardware is required for most movie DVD's. If your computer does not have hardware MPEG-2 support, it will not be able to play movie CD's.
DVD-2: These drives can read all of the above formats, including CD-R. Again, hardware MPEG-2 support is required to play movie DVD's.
