TP 755,760,765 - MWave - Testing the MWave Modem in DOS
Applicable to: World-Wide
To test the MWave modem in DOS
Go to a DOS prompt in native DOS or in a DOS windows of Windows or OS/2. Type FASTCFG to start the MWave configuration utility. If you are in Windows you can use the HW Configuration icon in the MWave program group.
If the problem is with a native DOS application, check that the MWave DOS modem was loaded (one of the following will be checked, e.g. a bullet will indicate which is selected but for the modem to work the Advanced Modem must be selected.
Tele-game (14.4kbps modem and Sound Blaster)
Advanced Modem (28.8kbps modem)
If the Advanced Modem was not checked, exit FASTCFG and retry DOS modem application. (NOTE: When you exit will be prompted to establish this setting as a permeate or temporary setting. If you only want the modem to function, then you want it to be a permeate setting. Otherwise you must invoke FASTCFG to change to the desired setting.)
At the DOS prompt type:
ECHO ATA>COM2
Within three to five seconds you should hear a dial tone. Make sure that the volume control is turned up about half way then type:
ECHO ATH>COM2 to hang up and turn off the dial tone.
If you hear the dial tone through the system speakers, the ThinkPad is communicating with the modem, and the problem is probably in the application program setup.
If you still can't verify that the MWave modem is working, has new software has been added to the ThinkPad? This could result in an conflict with the MWave.
Each application program that uses the modem will have a different way to configure the modem. Usually there will be a SETUP or CONFIGURE menu option somewhere. Often there is a selection of modem profiles built in. If so choose:
-MWave modem
-Generic Hayes-type modem
-User-defined modem
-Hayes SmartModem 2400
-Hayes modem
-Hayes compatible modem
Note: If you select a modem of type "Other," you must include the proper modem initialization string. For most applications, the initialization string "AT&F" will work. See the MWave Modem on-line help for more information.
-Baud Rate 57,600 bps, or the maximum setting offered by your communications software.
If there is a way to directly enter the modem initialization string, it should be set to AT &F which resets the factory default settings. The initialization string could contain other AT commands for example to enable echo, turn off auto-answer, etc. but AT&F should be included first. If you get an ERROR message when the initialization string is set, it may contain an unusual AT command that the MWave modem does not understand. This should not be a problem if the proper modem selection is made. If you need a list of the AT commands that MWave understands, start the modem status display application in the MWave program group and click on the Help menu item. To enable MWave M.DSVD voice-over data, the AT command SS0=1 should be included in the modem setup string.
Modem applications also need to know what COM port the modem is at. If MWave was pre-installed in your product, you should know what COM port it is set to use. If you don't know, go to a DOS screen or DOS windows and type FASTCFG. Then click on the Hardware button at the bottom of the screen. It will tell you what COM port MWave is currently set to use.
