Aptiva - Precautions when using and storing diskettes

Applicable to: United States

Question:
What precautions should I take when using and storing diskettes?

Answer:
To keep diskettes in good working order, there are a number of things you should keep in mind. The comments and questions we have received from customers indicate that the highest number of problems experienced with diskettes are related to copying over information that is already on a diskette or formatting a diskette that has important information. Therefore, you should label all diskettes rather than try to remember what is on them. If you put files on a diskette that you do not want to erase or delete, write-protect the diskette. A diskette is write-protected when you can see through the hole on the lower left side of the diskette (a small 'slider' built into the diskette can be moved to close this hole if files need to be erased or updated). Files from the diskette can still be used and copied to other diskettes but you will not be able to accidentally delete files or format the diskette while this hole is kept open.

Never place diskettes near magnets. Many common items have magnetic parts inside them. Telephones, computer monitors, TVs, stereos, stereo speakers, and other electronic devices either have magnets in them or can create a magnetic field. Extreme heat, cold, and humidity can harm diskettes also. Therefore, keep all these things in mind when you are storing your diskettes.
