Aptiva - Configuration error 1162 at bootup

Applicable to: United States

If you have replaced the original modem that came with your system, you may receive the Configuration Error 1162 during the power on test. Select F1 to go to the Hardware Configuration Screen, where the serial port in error will be highlighted.

To correct this problem, power off the system, remove the modem card that you installed, and set the jumpers on it to use the COM1 port and IRQ 4. Your modem's installation manual should describe which jumpers to change for these settings. This will remedy most problems with Configuration Error 1162 and require that you only change the modem type and speed in any software that uses the modem.

Some modems may have come from the manufacturer plugged for COM4 and IRQ3. If this is the case, you can keep these settings by pressing the Escape key and replying Yes to save the changes. You must, however, be sure that you change the software to reflect this new situation. Specifically, you must change the software options to use COM4 and IRQ3 (if this is an option with the software), as well as changing the modem type and speed for the software.

You can also keep the original modem and thus have two modems in your system, each connected to its own phone line. You will need to be careful about how you set up your software so that the proper modem is used. Also, while it is possible that both modems can be run at the same time in your system, it is more likely that there may be problems associated with one or the other software packages. Trying to fix these types of problems can be difficult. You may need to contact the maker of the software packages to see if they know of any way to remedy the problem. As a general rule, it is much easier and much less frustrating to use only one communication software package at a time.

For any modem, consult the user's guide or installation instructions for information on system and phone line requirements, jumpers and addressing, and specific software settings for various communications programs.
