Aptiva - 2159 - ATI Mach 64 VESA BIOS extensions
Applicable to: World-Wide
Some programs, notably DOS-based games, require VESA BIOS extensions to work properly. 2159-Sxx model Aptivas include the software necessary to enable the VESA BIOS extensions.
The VESA BIOS extensions (VBE) are enabled by loading a TSR prior to starting any DOS-based games that require VBE. The filename of the VBE TSR is M64VBE.EXE, and it is located in the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS folder in the preload. It can be loaded as described below:
1. Click "Start" -> "Shutdown" -> "Shutdown to MS-DOS mode" and then click "Yes".
2. At the DOS prompt, type "CD\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS" and press "Enter".
3. At the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS> prompt, type "M64VBE", and press "Enter".
4. The VESA BIOS extensions will be loaded. You may now start your DOS-based games according to the manufacturer's instructions.
You will need to repeat these instructions each time you start a new MS-DOS mode session in which you will require the VESA BIOS extensions.
If you wish to have the VESA BIOS extensions loaded everytime the computer restarts in MS-DOS mode, do the following:
1. Boot into Windows 95.
2. Click "Start", "Run", then type "Edit c:\windows\dosstat.bat" in the run dialog box and click "OK"
3. When the DOSSTART.BAT file appears in the editor add the following line exaclty as shown
c:\windows\options\cabs\M64VBE.EXE
4. Press 'ALT' and 'F' at the same time then press 'X' to exit the editor
5. Press 'Y' when asked if you would like to save your changes.
