Aptiva - 2144/2168 (SL-H) Considerations: Tips for using Voice Type Control
Applicable to: World-Wide
- Use the Voice Manager icon in the Aptiva Productivity window. The same icon is in the VTC window doesn't prompt the user to setup the microphone settings in AudioStation.
- Before starting VTC, open AudioStation and check to make sure that the microphone button is on, on the Play side and the Record side.
- There is a series of reference cards associated with this product. Look for this wire bond pub in the ship group box. It is titled "IBM VoiceType Control for Windows Reference Cards"
- Speak normally, keep the mic about 2 ft from your mouth. You don't need to speak directly into the microphone. Speaking too close to the mic will cause a voice error. The voice error will say to the affect that you are too loud, reduce your mic input or don't speak so loudly.
- If you are getting poor recognition, increase or decrease your microphone input setting. To adjust the microphone input volume, use the Master control slider in AudioStation. Use the Master slider on the Record side, not the Play side.
- Turn the speaker volume down to reduce feedback from the microphone
- If the user is playing with the Sound Effects, he or she can severely affect the mic input to the voice navigator. This can be rectified by clicking on the Sound Effects button, on the Record side with Mic=On and clicking on the Mic Reset button or the All Off reset button. This will return all of the sound effects back to the preset states.
- The voice navigator uses the same mic input as if you are recording some sound with the Audio recorder (Wave file). Therefore a good check is to ask the user to try recording a sample of their voice and playing it back. If the user hears his recording, then the mic settings should be enabled.
- Check to see that the microphone is plugged into the computer (MWave card).
- Say the commands exactly as they appear in the commands windows (also known as the "What-Can-I-Say" window).
- Say "Start" or "Switch to" before the program you wish to open (see the "Where-Can-I-Go" window).
- If a command was not heard or did not execute properly, say the command again.
- CAUTION: For the user that might be using their own microphone you may need to adjust their microphone gain input. To do this you must change values in the MWAVE.INI file. See WINDOWS/MWAVE.INI in the PCMWAVE section:
RMICGAIN = 420 (max is 600, min is 180, try 300/360/480...)
AMICGAIN = 360 (max is 600, min is 180, try 300/360/480...)
