PS/1 - Information on Adding a Fixed Disk To a PS/1 286

Applicable to: United States

The PS/1 286 systems include models M01, M34, C01, and C34. These PS/1 286 systems use a modified RLL hard drive and hard drive controller, while the PS/1 386 systems use standard IDE drives and controllers.

It has been suggested that PS/1 286 systems could accept an IDE hard drive. Several users have attempted removing the installed RLL hard drive and replacing it with an IDE hard drive of a larger capacity. The RLL controller that is built into the 286 PS/1 system board uses a very different technology than that of the IDE hard drive. The RLL controller and IDE hard drive will not interact. Since the RLL controller will not accept an IDE drive, adding an IDE hard drive controller to the Adapter Card Unit has also been suggested. However, the RLL controller is built-in and cannot be readily disabled. The addition of an IDE controller and hard drive to the Adapter Card Unit on a 286 PS/1 system will not work either.

Now the question arises, what can you do to add a larger hard drive to your 286 PS/1? There are several options available to PS/1 286 owners. A larger hard drive can replace the existing RLL hard drive. This new larger capacity hard drive will also need to utilize the modified RLL technology so that it can interact with the built-in controller. There are several hard drives that meet this requirement. There are drives manufactured by IBM as well as other vendors.

The addition of a SCSI controller and hard drive also allows for hard drive expansion. SCSI (small computer systems interface) is technology that allows for the chaining of hard drives as well as other SCSI devices. One SCSI adapter can support as many as seven SCSI devices.

Finally, an external hard drive that attaches to the system's parallel port is good alternative. Parallel port hard drives allow the user to move the drive between different systems rather easily.
