Aptiva - 2144/2168-9xx Password prompt does not appear with Windows 95

Symptom:
With some preloaded Windows 95 Aptiva 9-series models, if customer selects the option for multiple user configurations, Windows 95 does not display the username/password prompt when the machine is booted.

Problem Isolation Aid:
None

Fix:
This is a known problem with some preloads.

Normally, you would enable multiple configurations in :
CONTROL PANEL, PASSWORDS, select 'User Profiles' tab, check radio button 'Users can customise their preferences and desktop settings. Windows switches to your personal settings
whenever you log in'.

To fix the problem, perform the following steps :

It is a good idea to have a look at the settings on a Windows 95 machine in the Helpcentre, as the Registry can be confusing]

1. Start the Registry Editor START, RUN, regedit [enter]
2. Six keys will be displayed. Double click the following sequence in order :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
MICROSOFT
WINDOWS
CURRENT_VERSION
NETWORK
Click once on the 'Real Mode Net' field which appears under NETWORK. This will display some information on the right side of the screen. The field 'Autologon' will be set to 0. Right-click on this field, and select MODIFY option. Press the 'delete' key once to remove '00' and type in value of '01'.
Once done, shutdown the registry in the normal manner, and restart the machine as prompted.

The machine will now boot with a password prompt.
