Aptiva - Why do I get an Insufficient Memory error when installing software?

Applicable to: United States

If you are getting "insufficient memory resources" errors, first look on the box the software came in. See if it indicates whether or not the program is supposed to run under DOS or Windows. If it says Windows, then there is not a whole lot of troubleshooting you can do. Most Windows software should run without making any modifications to your system.

If the program was made to run under DOS, then there are some things you can check. The first is memory requirements. Many DOS applications, especially games, were written to be run under True DOS, not Windows. However, most can be made to work--with a little customizing. The most common cause for a game not running is an "out of memory" message. Buying more RAM will not help this situation. The memory referred to is "conventional memory." This is the first 640K of your system memory.

A program has been written that will automatically optimize your conventional memory. The file (BLUEBOOT.EXE) can be downloaded from the IBM PC Co BBS. To obtain the necessary file click here .

Once you have downloaded it, open "My Computer" and double-click on the file (wherever you saved it). The program will ask you to insert a 3.5-inch diskette into your A: drive. Finish the procedure and then view the a:\readme.txt file on the diskette for installation instructions.

If you still can't get it to work, contact the vendor that wrote the application. There should be a technical support phone number in the documentation, or search using a search engine on the World Wide Web, such as the Webcrawler at the following address: http://www.webcrawler.com. You can also reach the IBM PC HelpCenter for assistance; however, there may be a fee involved. The phone number is 1-800-772-2227.
