Aptiva - Why can't I connect at 28.8Kbps with my Mwave modem?

Applicable to: United States

Q: Why can't I connect at 28.8?
A: There are several reasons you might not be able to connect to another modem at a speed of 28.8Kbps. If you consistently connect at a speed of 21400 or higher, consider yourself fortunate. Most phone systems in the US do not have circuits fast enough to handle data transfers at speeds any higher. However, you can do the following:

1. Make sure that your serial port is locked at 38400 or higher (57600 is recommended). This is usually set within your communication application, not the windows control panel.

2. If you experience difficulties connecting at a modem speed of 28.8 Kbps to a particular number, or if you have trouble connecting to a particular modem, try the following.

- If the connection is not made and the speaker is OFF:
1. Disable V.42 bis and MNP 5 using AT"H%C
2. Disable V.42 (AT\N3) or MNP 1-4 (AT\N5). You could also disable both with AT\N.

- If the connection is not made and the speaker remains on:
1. Reduce the maximum modem throughput using the AT commands
ATS28=19 (for 26400 bps), ATS28=18 (24000bps), ATS28=17
(21600 bps), or ATS28=16 (19200 bps).

2. If you've tried the step above and it still does not connect, use AT*TH8 to control the speed.
Once you connect using the AT*TH8 command, remember to reset your modem using either AT&F (for factory defaults) or AT*TH4. If you forget to reset, all connections there after will transmit at lower V.34 connection rates.

To perform a check on your Mwave Card, you can download the Diagnostic program, MWDIAG.EXE. To download the file click here .

The new drivers were written with the intention of being able to get more speed out of phone lines that are not "clean".
