IBM PC730/PC750 - 16/4 Token-Ring/A problems On MCA/PCI models

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
When a 16/4 Token-Ring/A Adapter (74F9410) is installed in a MCA/PCI PC730 or 750 (Device Types 6876 and 6886) with the ADAPTEC 2940 PCI SCSI Adapter, problems may occur if the T/R card address range is set to 64K. The main symptom is likely to be a machine hang when the token-ring card is accessed.

Problem Isolation Aids:
Because of an error in POST, when the token-ring card is set to an address range of D0000 - DFFFF, this area is seen as being free. The PCI SCSI card will then attempt to use this area at boot, causing memory conflicts. The PCI SCSI card uses >16K memory at boot, and the D0000-DFFFF region is the only area where this is available. The error in POST only occurs when the Token-Ring card is set to 64K.

Fix:
Set the Token-Ring card Address Range to 16 or 32K. This should not affect performance greatly, as the card pages at 16K. More detailed information on this can be found in the IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Adapter/A Installation and Testing Instructions. A fix will be made to POST to stop the range D0000-DFFFF being seen as free, when it is actually used by the token-ring card. This will however not allow the card to work at 64K. If a Token-Ring 16/4 Adapter/A must be used at 64K, the Adaptec PCI SCSI must be disabled, and the on-board IDE controller used instead. It is recommended that if the 16/4 Adapter/A is used on this machine with the Adaptec SCSI enabled, that the T/R card not be set to a 64K address range.
