Adding a SCSI fast wide device to a SCSI fast and narrow controller

Applicable to: Canada, United States

Potential products affected:
70G8494 2.0GB FAST/WIDE SCSI2 Hard Disk Drive
94G3052 1.12GB FAST/WIDE SCSI2 Hard Disk Drive
94G3055 2.25GB FAST/WIDE SCSI2 Hard Disk Drive
94G3057 4.51GB FAST/WIDE SCSI2 Hard Disk Drive
94G3059 5.31GB FAST/WIDE SCSI2 Hard Disk Drive

In most situations, a narrow SCSI device (8bit width and 50pin connection) such as a hard drive, will require a narrow controller, or a fast/wide controller (16bit width and 68pin connection) with a fast/wide to narrow converter, such as part# 32G3925 (fru 92F0324). When there is a need to connect a fast/wide SCSI device, it is recommended that a fast/wide controller is used. Yet, due to certain configuration needs and product supply, it is possible to connect a fast/wide SCSI device to a narrow controller, as well as a narrow device to a fast/wide controller. Currently, IBM offers 70G8498 as a MicroChannel Fast/Wide SCSI Adapter /A. This controller is supported on the IBM MCA systems with an IML Partition. To use this configuration follow the process below:

Adding a Narrow SCSI Device to the IBM FAST/WIDE SCSI Adapter /A
Special instructions for configuring wide controllers to disable wide messaging

When the Fast/Wide adapter is in a PS/2 with a narrow cable and a wide SCSI device is to be added to the cable using the Meritec adapter to allow the physical connection, the below steps must be taken.

Note: These steps assume that the adapter files are already present on the reference disk section of the hard drive or have been copied to the reference diskette if the first hard drive is being added to the system at this time.

1) Without the wide drive attached, start the system and press F1 while the system is booting to start the configuration program.
2) Choose "Set Configuration"
3) From the next menu choose "change configuration"
4) Press F8 until the Fast/Wide SCSI adapter settings are displayed.
5) Find the line that says "Wide SCSI Messages - Internal" and choose "Disable" (Use the F5 key to toggle Enable/Disable)
6) Ensure that the next line for Internal/External busses is set to "Separate".
7) Choose F10 to save, then F3 as needed to exit and restart.
8) Power off system and attach wide drive to SCSI and power connections.
9) Restart system and choose F1 again.
10) Again, decline auto configuration, instead choose "set Configuration"
11) Choose "Set and View SCSI configuration"
12) The device should now appear at the ID it is configured for and at the proper size. If so - save and restart system.
13) If the device is shown at the wrong size, incorrect termination on the SCSI bus may be indicated - check termination and placement of terminating devices on the SCSI cable.
14) If the device does not show at all, ensure that the drive is spinning, and set at an ID in the range of 0-6. ID 7 is reserved for the controller, and the upper ID's 8-15 are disabled because the Wide cable is not being used.

Adding a Fast/Wide SCSI Device to a Narrow Controller
For systems with narrow controllers, it is possible to add the FAST/WIDE SCSI devices to the system. A cable converter will be needed that will allow the fast/wide device to connect to the narrow cable connector (50pin at cable to 68pin at device).
