RAPID RESUME AND STANDBY (APM)

Q: What is happening if my Aptiva computer does not Standby or go into Rapid Resume at the exact time I have set? What if it does not ever Standby or go into Rapid Resume?

(ANSWER FOLLOWS IN TWO PARTS)

PART 1

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON RAPID RESUME TECHNOLOGY

Turning your computer off at arbitrary times can damage files on your computer. One must perform a Shutdown in Windows 95 or OS/2; in Windows 3.11 one must exit Windows. Shutting these applications down properly closes all files and prevents them from being 'truncated' or worse: being damaged permanently.

IBM has developed a technology called "Rapid Resume" that eliminates the necessity of doing these steps at the conclusion of every work session. This technology allows your computer to power itself off without you, the user, having to save your data, or shut down your computer.

Before the computer powers down, Rapid Resume takes a 'snapshot' of the contents of memory and saves the information to the hard drive. To accomplish this, many of the computer devices are polled to determine what 'state' they are in. After polling each device, Rapid Resume writes all of this information into a data file on the hard drive.

When the computer is turned back on, the computer knows to look for the data file which contains this snapshot. --This is the second step in performing a 'Resume.' It then restores the contents of this file to each appropriate device. In effect, the computer does not know it was turned off.

This technology works with most operating systems and programs! However, some software packages have difficulties with Rapid Resume.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM

If you believe you are a experiencing problem using Rapid Resume or Standby, try the following steps to resolve the problem.
1) Access 'Rapid Resume Manager' and choose 'Standby' or 'Rapid Resume' (or both) and enable the feature(s) you desire.
2) If you are using the Windows 95 operating system, check the AutoPlay feature included by Microsoft. To do this, double-click on 'My Computer'. Then, double-click on 'Control-Panel'. From here, go into 'Settings'. Click the '+' sign by 'CD ROM' and the branch will expand. Now click the CD ROM Drive Name beneath the heading 'CD ROM'. (This driver name varies from computer to computer.) Click on 'Properties' and then 'Settings'. If a check is next to 'Auto-insert notification', AutoPlay is ENABLED.
Remove the mark and try using your Standby or Rapid Resume feature.
AutoPlay continuously monitors the CD ROM drive for the insertion of a CD.

If the above procedure has not resolved the issue, try the following:

3) Turn off (close) any screen saver, program, or device that makes intermittent accesses to the hard disk. Also, disable devices that poll COM ports and ensure that the keyboard or mouse is not bumped during diagnostics. ANY activity created by reading or writing the hard disk resets the length of time the computer will wait before performing a Standby or Rapid Resume. Re-test Rapid Resume.

4) Some operating systems (i.e. Windows 95) solicit their own reads and writes to the hard disk under certain circumstances. This causes Rapid Resume to reset its timer and start a new count. To work around this issue, allow the system to power up and start Windows 95. Adjust the Standby or Rapid Resume settings as desired. Next, start the programs you want running when the computer Resumes or goes into Standby. Next, allow the system to power off on its own. The next time you turn your computer on, the automatic power off time will be less impacted by the operating system.
