IBM Personal Systems Group Support for Microsoft Windows 2000 Beta

IBM is providing a selection of drivers and information to assist our customers who are evaluating the Microsoft Windows 2000 family of products during the beta test phase. It is hoped that these materials will be helpful to you. However, please understand that, beta-level code and information by their nature are prototype materials and that IBM is not in a position to assure their quality, function, performance or compatibility. Therefore, IBM does not provide technical support for these items. IBM also is not obligated to provide any maintenance or updates for the items. IBM provides the drivers and any related information or services "AS IS", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, NON-INFRINGEMENT AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES, SO THE ABOVE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION MAY NO APPLY TO YOU. IN THAT EVENT, SUCH WARRANTIES ARE LIMITED IN DURATION AND SCOPE TO THE GREATEST EXTENT ALLOWED BY LAW. IBM's warranties, if any, for newly purchased IBM hardware products are as stated in the applicable IBM Statement of Limited Warranties, and for IBM licensed programs are as stated in the applicable IBM Program License Agreement.

IN NO EVENT WILL IBM BE LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS OF OR DAMAGE TO YOUR DATA, LOST PROFITS, LOST SAVINGS, THIRD PARTY DAMAGES, INCIDENTAL DAMAGES OR OTHER ECONOMIC CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, EVEN IF IBM HAS BEEN ADVISED IN ADVANCE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

These instructions were written based on installing Windows 2000 Beta build 1946 on a blank hard drive.

  1. Flash the BIOS to the current level available on the IBM Support web page. To download the latest BIOS, click here.
  2. Format the hard drive or create a 2GB FAT16 partition and format the C drive.
  3. Either boot from a floppy disk with CD-ROM drivers or boot from the Windows 2000 CD. A good idea is to copy the /I386 sub-directory into a different partition and type WINNT and press Enter from that sub-directory.
  4. Run Windows NT from the source media, either a CD or the hard drive. Booting from the CD will start the installation process automatically. If running from the CD-ROM drive or hard drive, a smartdrive disk caching utility will speed up the copy process.
  5. Setup starts the file copying process.
  6. After the file copying process ends, press Enter to reboot the machine after removing the floppy disk (if one was used).
  7. Press Enter to confirm the Beta version installation.
  8. Press Enter to continue setup process.
  9. Press F8 to accept the EULA.
  10. The FDISK screen appears. Make sure that C:\ FAT is highlighted and press Enter to continue the setup process.
  11. Next select the file system to be installed. The FAT file system installation is preferred since the drive can be converted at a later date. Press Enter to accept the current file system.
  12. Setup copies files after creating the installation directories.
  13. Setup loads INF files.
  14. System reboots.
  15. Windows 2000 GUI starts and then the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard appears.
  16. Click Next to continue with the setup process.
  17. Installing Devices screen appears.
  18. Setup finds IBM Thinkpad Fast Infrared port and asks if you want to postpone installing the device until after the setup process ends. Click Yes.
  19. Click Next at Regional settings if you want the US, or change as desired.
  20. Enter your Name and Organization.
  21. Enter your computer name and the Administrator password.
  22. Adjust time and date if required, and then click Next to continue.
  23. Network components are being installed.
  24. Installing more components (more copying of files)....
  25. Setup is completing where Start Menu items, registry components and settings are saved as well as the removal of temporary installation files.
  26. When the Completed Setup Wizard window appears, click Finish to restart the system.
  27. When restarting, a dialog box stating that errors occurred will appear. Click Yes to view the log file. The Log file will show errors in .CAT files and OLE control. Click Close to continue.
  28. The system will restart. When prompted after restarting, log into Windows 2000.

Click Yes to restart machine (remove the ACP modem disk prior to restarting). Reinsert modem disk after the Administrator password screen. Click on Next at the Hardware Wizard (the wizard will find an audio device). Click Next and remove all the check marks except the one by the floppy drive and click Next at A:\MWTPDSP.INI.
