TP 380,385 - Point Enabler function in Port Replicator

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
PC Card (PCMCIA) adapters will not function in port replicator when using a vendor supplied point enabler.

CONFIGURATION:
ThinkPad 380/385 all models with PC Card installed in Port Replicator Slot(s). Operating System DOS only or DOS/Win 3.x. The feature to move the address of the secondary PCMCIA controller (the one in the port replicator) will not function in Windows 95. If the controller address is moved from the default, that controller will not work in Windows 95.
This tip does not apply when using Card and Socket Services, such as SystemSoft Cardworks. Point enablers typically are supplied for usage in a memory restricted DOS only or DOS/Win3.x environment only.

SOLUTION:
Use PS2.EXE in DOS to move the I/O address of the secondary PCIC (PCMCIA Controller Chip) to 03E2. This is the usual I/O address of a secondary PCMCIA controller. (It is the address of the secondary controllers in the Dock-II, SelectaDock, as well as the ThinkPad Port Replicator Model 1 (for the 750/760/360 models) The secondary PCIC on the ThinkPad 380/385 Port Replicator defaults at I/O address 03E4, due to Windows 95 PCI addressing limitations. Changing it to 03E2 should make it compatible with configurations that have been designed for any of the other docking/port replicator options mentioned above. PS2 Syntax is : PS2 PCCARD EXP 03E2 <<<valid choices for address are 03E2 and 03E4(default) Only.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
There are usually, but not always, additional steps which must be taken to redirect a point enabler to find a card in a secondary controller. For example, most IBM supplied point enablers (i.e. pointtr.sys, pointeth.sys) are redirected to the second controller by means of a command line parameter like PCIC=03E2. Some enablers may not need this type of parameter. Other enablers may need it, but not support PCIC=03E4, which would be the required parameter with the second controller at it's default address. It is for these situations that moving the address with the PS2 command may be useful.
