Aptiva - 2144/2168 FDISK, Format and Recovery for systems with PC DOS 7.0, Microsoft Windows 3.11 and OS/2 Warp (without Voice Type Dictation)

Applicable to: AP-S, Canada, United States

Making Recovery Diskettes (3):
Can be done either in OS/2, DOS/Windows or with the MPEG Installation Diskette. It takes approximately 1 minute, 30 seconds per diskette in DOS/Windows (same process used by MPEG Installation Diskette) and 2 minutes, 50 seconds per diskette in OS/2 using the Create Recovery Diskettes icon in the First Steps folder.

FDISK, Format, and Recovery (takes approximately 23 minutes after Recovery Diskettes are made):
1. Boot with Recovery Diskette 1.

2. Switch to Recovery Diskette 2 when prompted.

3. Select Option 6, Go to OS/2 prompt.

4. Remove Diskette 2 and insert Diskette 3.

5. Type FDISK at the prompt and press "Enter".

6. Press "Enter" for menu.

7. Press D to delete partition.

8. Press "Enter" for menu.

9. Press C to create partition.

10. Press "Enter" to make one (1) partition.

11. Press "Enter" to select Primary Partition.

12. Press F3 to exit FDISK.

13. Press F3 again when menu appears.

14. Remove Diskette 3 and insert Diskette 1, then press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to reboot the system.

15. Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4.

16. Type FORMAT C: at the prompt and press "Enter". If there is a volume label on the hard drive, a prompt will appear to enter the current volume label. In most cases, this will be MAIN FOLDER. Press "Enter" after typing the volume label.
Press Y when prompted to format the disk. The OS/2 format does not take long (a couple of seconds).

17. When prompted for a volume label, DO NOT enter a volume label. Entering a volume label will prevent the system from correctly rebooting after the recovery process is complete.

18. Type EXIT and press "Enter" to return to the menu. Remove Diskette 3 and insert Diskette 2 when prompted.

19. Select Option 1 (Recover Aptiva OS/2 Warp Image). When prompted for CD-ROM drive letter, type D and press "Enter".

20. A confirmation screen will appear. Type Y and press "Enter" to proceed or N and "Enter" to cancel the procedure. Software will now be loaded on the hard drive.

21. When prompted, remove Diskette 2 from the drive and press "Enter". Do not remove CD from CD-ROM drive until system reboots. If the CD is removed, the computer will boot to OS/2 rather than DOS/Windows.

22. MPEG software will have to be re-installed. Once the system has restarted, exit the Program Manager and reboot the system with the MPEG installation diskette in the A: drive.

23. Select the option to Install the MPEG drivers (I). Files will be copied from the diskette, then the user will be prompted to insert the MPEG CD's to copy files from them.

24. After the procedure is complete, the system will prompt the user to remove the diskette and reboot the system. This will return the user to the Program Manager with the MPEG group created.
