PS/1 - How can I restore my original PS/1 software to my PS/1 or PS/Note?

The IBM PS/1 and PS/Note models with Windows 3.1 pre-installed were developed with PS/1 FITNESS. The PS/1 FITNESS program allows you to easily backup files and restore files on your hard disk.

To RESTORE your original PS/1 Software, please follow the appropriate instructions below:

If you have created a Recovery diskette:
1. Insert this Recovery diskette into drive A with your PS/1 turned off.

2. Turn on your computer and wait until the Recovery Menu is displayed.

3. Choose #4 on the menu (Go to the DOS Prompt) and press the ENTER key. This will bring you to an A: prompt.

4. At the A: prompt, type FDISK /MBR and press the ENTER key. This will give you another A: prompt. At this A: prompt type FDISK and press the ENTER key.

5. There will be a blue FDISK MENU on the screen. Choose #3(DELETE) and press the ENTER key.

6. This will give a PARTITION MENU. Choose #1(PRIMARY) and press the ENTER key.

7. A warning will show and #1 will be displayed. Press the ENTER key. The display will ask you to enter the VOLUME LABEL. The name is displayed on the screen under disk status. It is usually MAIN FOLDER and sometimes HOST _FOR_C. Type this exactly as listed and press the ENTER key. It will give the prompt ARE YOU SURE. Type the letter Y and press the ENTER key. It will then prompt to press the ESC key to continue; press the ESC key.

8. The FDISK MENU will be displayed on the screen. Choose#3(DELETE) and press the ENTER key. This will give the PARTITION MENU. Choose#4(NON-DOS) and press the ENTER key.

9. A warning will show and #1 will be displaye. Press the ENTER key. It will give the prompt ARE YOU SURE. Type the letter Y and press the ENTER key. It will then prompt to press the ESC key to continue; press the ESC key.

10. There will be the FDISK MENU displayed on the screen. Choose #1(CREATE) and press the ENTER key.

11. The PARTITION MENU will be displayed. Choose#1(PRIMARY) and press the ENTER key. A prompt will ask DO YOU WANT TO MAKE THE DRIVE AS LARGE AS POSSIBLE AND ACTIVE. Type the letter Y and press the ENTER key.

12. There will be a prompt on the screen that says THE SYSTEM WILL NOW RESTART, INSERT THE DOS DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY. The recovery disk is already in the drive; press the ENTER key. This will restart the system and bring up the RECOVERY MENU. From the menu, select the option THAT ALLOWS YOU TO INSTALL THE ORIGINAL PS/1 SOFTWARE. Now the software may be reloaded to the system.

13. PLEASE FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS AS THEY COME ON THE SCREEN. THIS PROCESS IS MENU DRIVEN AND YOU CANNOT GET LOST.



If you have NOT made a Recovery diskette AND have not selected the PS/1 Fitness ERASE option; PROVIDING YOU DO NOT HAVE A LARGE SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF LOST ALLOCATION, CROSS-LINKED FILES, TRUNCATED FILES, OR COMPRESSED VOLUME FILE ERRORS (CVF). You can perform the operatons below:

1. Exit Windows and select the DOS Prompt option.

2. Type: CD\RECOVERY and press [Enter].

3. Type: PKUNZIP -O -D *.ZIP C:\ and press [Enter].

************NOTE: For units that came preloaded with Dos 6.x, you can use PS1UNZIP (drive letter) \ (directory) \ filename.
i.e. = PS1UNZIP C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI " *.* " == Can be used for all files in a given directory.


This will restore all of the original preloaded software to your hard disk.
