TP 365X/XD - Installing and the IBM Auto 16/4 Token Ring and Ethernet II PCMCIA adapter

Applicable to: World-Wide

This document is intended to provide basic instructions for installing and configuring IBM Network Adapters on the Thinkpad 365X/XD systems. Examples are given for several of the more popular configurations, however, the list is not intended to be complete. If your configuration differs from those shown here, this document may be useful as a guide.

Shown here are the procedures to configure Warp Connect, Windows 95 (preload) and Dos/Windows with Novell Client with the following adapters:
IBM PCMCIA Auto 16/4 Token Ring Adapter
IBM PCMCIA Ethernet-II 10 Base T Adapter

Contents :
1) System Information
2) Resources
3) Warp Connect Information
4) Windows 95 Information
5) Novell Information

1) System Information :
Thinkpad 365X/XD Systems
Preloads Offered: Microsoft Windows 95, OS/2 Warp Connect(365XD only; limited availability)

What Docking Solutions are available: None

2) Resources :

Available resources when system is shipped from IBM (or initialized).

IRQs :
9,10,11,15
Upper Memory Area :
C800 - DFFF (available)
E000 - EFFF (available with current BIOS level, but subject to possible future limitation)
List any unusual I/O address allocations:
See Audio notes mentioned in NOTES section.

Resource Information :
There is a matrix which lists each system device, including what resources each device uses, as well as all optional settings. This information included IRQ, I/O, UMB, and DMA usage of all built in and optional features of the system. This information is in the Users Guide for the Thinkpad 365X/XD series in the section, "Appendix A - Avoiding Hardware Conflicts"

Information as to the current settings can be gathered by using the Thinkpad Features program on the system, this is also where system resources may be reassigned.

Each section of this document lists resources that were used in testing of these configurations. Other settings will also work, but the intent is to specify a known working model.

3) OS/2 WARP and WARP CONNECT:
Suggested Resource settings for IBM adapters.

PCMCIA TR :
I/O A20 , Shared Ram D400 (16K) , MMIO D800 , IRQ 9 or 11
PCMCIA Ethernet :
I/O 300 , Shared Ram D400, IRQ 9 or 11

Warp Connect :
Install the base operating system according to instructions in the Users Guide. Make sure that NO PCMCIA support is installed in the initial install, and do not select to install the networking support, this will be added later. Use the VGA fix diskette and install the system with the video set to VGA.

After the initial install, follow the instructions in the manual to add Thinkpad Features, ESS Audio Support, SVGA Video Support, PCMCIA Features, and the PCI Busmaster IDE Driver.

Important :
Use Thinkpad Features to change the I/O address of the Audio from 220 to 240 if a Token Ring Card is used. There can be a conflict with the I/O of the Token Ring (at A20) and the Audio (at 220) if this is not done.

Networking Support can then be added, use "Selective Install for Networking" or run install from the Connect CD. Choose your adapter and use the settings referenced above. Make sure to specify them all, and PCMCIA Mode should be YES.

Configure your requester and TCP/IP or other networking components as you would normally.

Your system should now be set up properly.

WARP BLUE PACK with Lan Requestor & MPTS. - No differences noted. Set cards and resources the same as you would with Connect.

WARP CONNECT PRELOAD (365XD Only) - The system ships fully configured as far as the operating system is concerned. Use the "Warp Connect Selective Install for Networking" object to install the Network components you wish. Use the resource settings, instructions, and NOTES in this section, and there should be no problems encountered.

NOTES:
As mentioned above, the I/O MUST be set up to 240 if a Token Ring Card is used! If this is not done the lantran.log ( in the \ibmcom subdirectory) file will record that the card was found in socket (1 or 2) and then 2 lines later report that there is no adapter present in the socket. If the system is initialized or the BIOS is updated the I/O address will need to be reset to 240. In some cases, Thinkpad features may report that the Audio is set to 240 even though it is really at 220. If your symptoms match those associated with this problem, please open Thinkpad Features, hit "DEFAULT", exit Thinkpad Features, then restart Thinkpad Features and reset the Audio to 220. Then restart the system.

There are no special notes for the IBM Ethernet-II.

4) WINDOWS 95 PRELOAD:

IBM PCMCIA Ethernet-II

Windows 95 will automatically detect and install software for the IBM Ethernet Adapter, There should not be any configuration problems with the built-in support for this card, and it works properly when left at the resource settings that Windows 95 defaults for this adapter.

IBM PCMCIA Auto 16/4 Token Ring

INSTALL OVERVIEW:
IBM has released updated drivers with better functionality and resource selection than the drivers built into the Windows 95 Operating System. Please obtain these files from the IBM BBS or World Wide Web site before configuring this adapter.

IMPORTANT: Use Thinkpad Features or Device Manager to change the I/O address of the ESS Audio from 220 to 240 when a Token Ring Card is used. There can be a conflict with the I/O of the Token Ring (at A20) and the Audio (at 220) if this is not done. If this condition exists, Device Manager will report that the Token Ring Card is causing a resource conflict and ask you to configure it manually. It is a good idea to uncheck the "Use Automatic Settings" box in the resource settings page of Device Manager once the audio is properly configured to I/O 240. This will prevent the audio from reverting to 220 in the event that the system is initialized.

1) Obtain the PCMCIA TR Card Driver Disk (TRPCC.EXE) file , make the first diskette (TRPCC1.exe).
To obtain a copy of this diskette, DoubleClick here :

2) Follow the instructions in the \win95\read.me file from the TRPCC1 disk to ensure that Windows 95 will prompt for a diskette when the card is inserted.

3) From a clean (no network card installed) configuration, boot the system to the Windows 95 desktop.

4) Insert the IBM Token Ring Adapter (16/4 Auto PCMCIA Adapter) into the slot, use the TRPCC1 diskette when prompted. Install the card, supplying the Win95 disks or path to files on the HDD when requested.(W-95 setup files are located on the preload in c:\windows\options\cabs)

5) When the installation asks to shut down and restart, do so.

6) If the system does not connect to the LAN on the next reboot, use Device Manager to manually set the settings for the adapter. Those below are known to work.

I/O A20-A23
IRQ 9, 10, or 15
Memory C8000-C9FFF
Memory CC000-CFFFF

NOTES: If the TRPCC disks are not used, the configuration will default to unusable resources, and may be difficult to configure, It is
strongly reccommended to obtain the latest drivers.

5) NOVELL CLIENT (DOS/WINDOWS) INFORMATION:
PCMCIA Drivers (Card and Socket Service Drivers) are available for DOS and Windows from the Diskette Factory application included on the preload. The file name is PCTPGW31.EXE. Both the Ethernet-II and the Token Ring card will require drivers located on their adapter diskettes. Please obtain the latest version of either the ETCC.EXE (Ethernet) or TRPCC.EXE (Token Ring)
To obtain a copy of the TRPCC.EXE diskette, DoubleClick here :
To obtain a copy of the ETCC.EXE diskette, DoubleClick here :

Novell Client software must be installed on the system, the install program on each adapter diskette has a menu driven routine to install the driver software. Use these settings when running the install. Listed below are sample resource settings and net.cfg files for each adapter.

NOTES: Use Thinkpad Features to change the I/O address of the ESS Audio from 220(hex) to 240h when a Token Ring Card is used. There can be a conflict between the I/O of the Token Ring (at A20h) and the I/O of the Audio (at 220h) if this is not done.
