PCMCIA 8X-20X CD-ROM Drive - Installation and Troubleshooting under DOS/Windows 3.1

Product Limitations:
1. The Game Port is supported only in a Windows 95 environment. There is no support for a joystick in DOS, Windows NT, or OS/2.

2. A digital joystick is not supported. Use an analog joystick or gamepad.

3. The joystick must be attached to the device before the system is started in Windows 95. If the joystick is attached after the system has started, shutdown and restart the system.

4. The game port does not support MIDI devices.

5. Systems with built-in game ports may conflict with the game port for the 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive. This may require the built-in game port to be disabled.

6. The 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive is not supported with Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0. Sound and the game port will not operate in an NT environment.

7. Sound is not supported in a Win-OS2 session when using the 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive in an OS/2 Warp v3 or v4 environment.

8. Sound with the 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive is supported in a native Windows 95 environment. Sound is not supported in a DOS application within Windows 95.

9. The 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive uses the ESS1688 sound chip. This may cause conflicts with systems that have built-in sound support, which will require built-in sound support to be disabled.

10. The 20X Max Portable and Portable Stereo CD ROM Drives may fail to be recognized after the system has resumed from its suspend mode. If this occurs, you will need to remove the PC Card prior to suspending the system, and then inserting the PC Card after the system has resumed.

11. Your system may experience a hang condition on boot when using Windows 95. When the PC card from the 20X Max portable or Portable Stereo CD-ROM drives are used with a network adapter, such as a Token Ring Credit Card Adapter. The article ID is Q136777. the conflict is seen when the network adapter uses a default I/O address of 220. You will need to resolve the conflict by manually configuring both devices.

Installation Notes:

DOS Installation:
(CD ROM Support for the IBM 20X Max Portable and 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drives).

Card and Socket Services must be loaded prior to installing the support software for the 20X Max Portable or 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drives.

1. Attach the interface cable from the CD ROM drive to the PC Card. Insert your PC Card into the PC Card slot on your computer. The PC Card included with the 20X Max CD ROM will require a PCMCIA Type II slot. Turn on your system and the CD ROM drive.

2. From the DOS command prompt, insert the CD ROM Option Diskette into your floppy diskette drive. Type A:\INSTALL and press Enter. Follow the on-screen instructions. Once installation has completed, reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

NOTE: Automatic Installation will install the required software without intervention. Selective Installation will require your response to install the required software into a specified directory, as well as the desired IRQ and I/O base address.

Windows 3.1 Installation:
To install the sound features for the IBM 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM, additional software is required. These steps do not apply to the base drive without sound.

1. Insert the Option Diskette into the floppy diskette drive.

2. From Windows 3.1 Program Manager, go to File then Run.

3. Type A:\SETUP.EXE in the Run Command Line, then select OK. Follow the on-screen instructions. Once installation has completed successfully, exit windows and restart the system for changes to take effect.

NOTE: Automatic Installation will install the required software without intervention. Selective Installation will require your response to install the required software into a specified directory, as well as the desired IRQ and I/O base address.

DOS CD ROM Device Driver Uninstall:
To uninstall PCMCD20X.SYS from CONFIG.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE from AUTOEXEC.BAT:

1. Insert the option diskette into the floppy diskette drive and type A:\INSTALL.

2. Select Remove Driver; then press ESC key to exit the program.

3. Restart the system.

Windows 3.1 CD ROM Device Driver Uninstall:
1. To uninstall the Windows 3.1 sound features, insert the option diskette into the floppy diskette drive and type A:\SETUP
