Aptiva - How to install new software in OS/2

Applicable to: United States

Most applications for OS/2 use a file named INSTALL.EXE or INSTALL.CMD on the first diskette (if several diskettes are used) or on the CD for the OS/2 application. On CD-based applications, the INSTALL file may be kept in a subdirectory and not in the main directory of the CD-ROM drive. Consult the installation information that comes with the CD-ROM-based application for details.

For a diskette-based OS/2 application:

1. Close down any applications running in background that are not needed. Some program installation procedures may recommend shutting down any anti-virus programs as well.

2. Open an OS/2 window to get to the command prompt.

3. Place the first diskette (may be labeled "Installation Diskette") in the A: drive.

(For instructions on how to get to an OS/2 command prompt, click here. )

4. At the command prompt type: "a:\install" and press "Enter".

5. Follow any prompts for inserting other diskettes or for supplying information during the process.

6. Once installation is complete, shut down and restart OS/2 to permit any updates to the Config.sys file to take effect.

For a CD-ROM-based OS/2 application:

1. Close down any applications running in background that are not needed. Some program installation procedures may recommend shutting down any anti-virus programs as well.

2. Open an OS/2 window to get to the command prompt.

(For instructions on how to get to an OS/2 command prompt, click here. )

3. Place the application CD in the drive.

4. At the command prompt type: "x:\install" and press "Enter" (See the note below).

5. Follow any prompts for information during the process.

6. Once installation is complete, shut down and restart OS/2 to permit any updates to the Config.sys file to take effect.

Note: In step 4 above, you must enter the CD-ROM drive letter (where x appears) as well as any subdirectory name, if
appropriate, based on the installation instructions that came with the application.
