PCMCIA 8X-20X CD-ROM Drive - Installation and Troubleshooting under Windows NT

Product Limitations:

The Game Port is supported only in a Windows 95 environment. There is no support for a joystick in DOS, Windows NT, or OS/2.

A digital joystick is not supported. Use an analog joystick or gamepad.

The joystick must be attached to the device before the system is started in Windows 95. If the joystick is attached after the system has started, shutdown and restart the system.

The game port does not support MIDI devices.

Systems with built-in game ports may conflict with the game port for the 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive. This may require the built-in game port to be disabled.

The 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive is not supported with Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0. Sound and the game port will not operate in an NT environment.

Sound is not supported in a Win-OS2 session when using the 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive in an OS/2 Warp v3 or v4 environment.

Sound with the 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive is supported in a native Windows 95 environment. Sound is not supported in a DOS application within Windows 95.

The 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive uses the ESS1688 sound chip. This may cause conflicts with systems that have built-in sound support, which will require built-in sound support to be disabled.

The 20X Max Portable and Portable Stereo CD ROM Drives may fail to be recognized after the system has resumed from its suspend mode. If this occurs, you will need to remove the PC Card prior to suspending the system, and then inserting the PC Card after the system has resumed.

Your system may experience a hang condition on boot when using Windows 95. When the PC card from the 20X Max portable or Portable Stereo CD-ROM drives are used with a network adapter, such as a Token Ring Credit Card Adapter. The article ID is Q136777. the conflict is seen when the network adapter uses a default I/O address of 220. You will need to resolve the conflict by manually configuring both devices.

    Installing 20X Max Portable CD ROM Support in Windows NT 3.51:

    Attach the interface cable from the CD ROM drive to the PC Card. Insert your PC Card into the PC Card slot on your computer. The PC Card included with the 20X Max CD ROM will require a PCMCIA Type II slot. Turn on your system and the CD ROM drive.

    Open Main then click on Windows NT Setup.

    Click on Add/Remove SCSI Adapter from the Options window.

    Click on Add from the Setup Message, and click on OK.

    Select Other from the list of adapters.

    Insert the option diskette into the floppy diskette drive, and select A: as the source drive. Click on OK.

    Check that 20X Max Portable CD ROM Drive is displayed, and click on OK.

    Click on Install. Click on Continue. Click on Close.

    Select Exit from the Options Window and click on OK.

    Remove the option diskette from the diskette drive.

    Select File and Shutdown from Program Manager. Restart the system.

    Windows NT 3.51 Uninstall:

    Attach the interface cable from the CD ROM drive to the PC Card. Insert your PC Card into the PC Card slot on your computer. The PC Card included with the 20X Max CD ROM will require a PCMCIA Type II slot. Turn on your system and the CD ROM drive.

    Insert the option diskette into the floppy diskette drive.

    Open Main and then click on Windows NT Setup

    Click on Add/Remove SCSI adapter from the Options Window.

    Select 20X Max Portable CD ROM, click on Delete, and click Yes to confirm the Remove Driver Message.

    Click OK from the Confirm Setup Message.

    To Reinstall:

    1. Click on Add, and click on OK from the Confirm Setup Message.
    2. Select 20X Max Portable CD ROM from the list of adapters, and click on Install.
    3. Click on New from the Windows NT Setup window.
    4. Type A:\TP760 as the source directory, and click Continue to update the device driver.
    5. Confirm that the list of adapters contains 20X Max Portable CD ROM from the Windows NT Setup Window, and click Close.
    6. Select Exit from the Options Window, and click OK.
    7. Click on File and Shutdown from Program Manager.
    8. Remove the option diskette from the diskette drive and restart the system.

    Installing 20X Max Portable CD ROM Support in Windows NT 4.0:

    1. Attach the interface cable from the CD ROM drive to the PC Card. Insert your PC Card into the PC Card slot on your computer. The PC Card included with the 20X Max CD ROM will require a PCMCIA Type II slot. Turn on your system and the CD ROM drive.
    2. Double click on My Computer and find Control Panel.
    3. Double click on Control Panel and find the SCSI Adapter icon.
    4. Double click on SCSI Adapter, and then select the Driver Tab.
    5. Click Add, and click on Have Disk from the Install Driver Window.
    6. Insert the option diskette into the floppy diskette drive, select the A: drive, and click on OK.
    7. Click OK from the Install Driver Window, and click Continue.
    8. When the message to restart the computer appears, remove the option diskette and click Yes to restart the system.
