Aptiva - How to obtain and install VESA BIOS extensions for Cxx systems
with SIS video chipset

Applicable to: United States

Some software applications, most notably games, may require that you install VESA BIOS extensions before the software will operate properly. The VESA BIOS extensions can be downloaded directly from the manufacturer of the video chipset. The information in this document applies to Aptiva C series systems with the following type designations: C21, C31, C32, C53, C6D, and C6E.

Note: After loading the drivers as described below, your system will be compliant with the VBE 2.0 standard.

Obtaining the VESA BIOS drivers:
The VESA BIOS drivers can be downloaded by directing your web browser to the following URL: http://www.sis.com.tw/html/driver.html#vbe
You will need to download the SISVBE.EXE file to a directory on your hard disk. You should download the file into a directory that is in your PATH, such as the c:\windows\command directory.

Installing the VESA BIOS extensions:
The VESA BIOS extensions do not need to be permanently installed on your system. Instead, they must be loaded before you attempt to run any program that requires them. To load the VESA BIOS extensions, follow the steps below:

1. Shutdown to an MS-DOS prompt by clicking "Start" -> "Shutdown" -> "Restart computer in MS-DOS Mode".

2. At the DOS prompt, type "sisvbe", and press "Enter". If the SIS VESA driver is in your path, the BIOS extensions will be loaded and you will see a message indicating that drivers are installed. If you downloaded the SISVBE.EXE file to a directory that is not in your path, you will need to change to that directory before running sisvbe.

3. You can now start your MS-DOS programs normally. Note that you will need to load these drivers each time you wish to run a DOS program that requires VESA BIOS extensions. If you use the SISVBE.EXE program frequently, you may wish to add the line c:\<directoryname>\sisvbe.exe, where <directoryname> is the name of the directory where the SISVBE.EXE file is stored, to the end of your DOSSTART.BAT file.

Note: Downloadable file subject to version change. Refer to the file's "readme" for further information.
