Aptiva - 2144/2168 (SL-H) Considerations: In DOS, customer may not get certain features in Mwave depending upon its configuration

Applicable to: World-Wide

Situation:
In DOS, the user may not be able to use certain features of the Mwave concurrently. For instance, the Mwave cannot work as a sound card and then as a 28.8 bps modem without the customer going into the ôDOS Games Utilityö or FASTCFG and switching between these modes of compatibility. In DOS, the Mwave is set to be in one level of compatibility or another. A user may complain that he or she cannot run his or her applications which require certain features and the Mwave may seem defective.

Reason:
This is a hardware technology limitation where the Mwave card is unable to automatically switch between these settings is due to the single-tasking nature of DOS. The Mwave card has so much power to throw at one function in a given instance and DOS can only allow it to do this in its straight-forward, single-tracked manner. The FASTCFG setting determines which functions the Mwave can perform in DOS. OS/2 and Windows, because of their architecturally distinctive multi-tasking capabilities, can seemingly handle many of these operations concurrently; their respective Mwave drivers are written for such.

Answer:
If the user is experiencing problems using the Mwave in DOS, check the Mwave configuration by going into the ôDOS Games Utilityö from the Aptiva Menu or by running FASTCFG. Determine which setting will benefit the user most and select it. The user will need to switch between these settings if different DOS applications require the different functions.
