Aptiva - How to make a non-Windows program run faster in 386 Enhanced Mode
Applicable to: World-Wide
You can improve the speed of a non-Windows application by adjusting settings in the application's Program Information File (PIF). A PIF tells Windows how to run the application. The following procedure suggests PIF changes for a non-Windows application running in 386 Enhanced mode.
IMPORTANT: PIF options are set so that the application runs properly. By changing the options, you may adversely effect the way the application runs. Make a copy of the application's current PIF before you make any changes. The would serve as a backup in the event that you need to restore the original settings.
1. In the Accessories Group window, open PIF Editor.
2. From the File menu, choose Open. Windows automatically selects the .PIF extension in the Filename box and, in the Files box, lists existing PIF files in the current directory. PIF files typically have the application main filename with a .PIF extension.
3. Select the directory and filename of your non-Windows application PIF, and then choose OK. If a PIF does not exist for your non-Windows application, select the filename _DEFAULT.PIF in the Files box, and then choose OK. In the Program Filename box, type the full path for the .EXE that the PIF corresponds to. For example, for MS Works for DOS you might type c:\windows\works.exe.
4. To make your non-Windows application run faster, you can change one or all the PIF settings as follows:
-- In both the KB Required and KB Desired boxes, type: 640
-- In Execution, select Exclusive to suspend other applications while this application is in the foreground.
-- In Display Usage, select Full Screen to start the application in a full-screen display rather than a window. Choose the Advanced button and, in Multitasking Options, clear the Detect Idle Time option to prevent Windows from giving resources to other applications while this application is idle or waiting for input from you. Clear this option only if the application runs too slow. Otherwise, this option should be selected because it enhances the performance of the entire system.
-- In Display Options, select the Video Memory: Text option. Text mode requires less memory than either the Low or High Graphics modes.
-- In Display Options, clear the Retain Video Memory option to release reserved memory to the system.
5. Choose OK.
6. From the File menu, choose Save As.
7. In the Filename box, type the full path of the new PIF, and then choose OK. For example, you might type: c:\windows\works.pif.
8. From the PIF Editor Control menu, choose Close.
9. Restart your application to use the new settings.
