Aptiva - Connecting to the IBM BBS using Hyperterminal - Australia

Applicable to: Australia

1. Run HyperTerminal by clicking on the "Start" button, then select "Programs", "Accessories", and then "HyperTerminal".
When the HyperTerminal group appears, double-click the icon "Hypertrm" (the icon with the monitor and telephone).

2. If the "Local Information" screen appears, enter the area code and any dial prefix that may be required and click on "OK".

3. For "New Connection", enter the name as "IBM BBS" or whatever you wish to label the icon, and press "Enter".

4. In the "Connect to" box, click on the down arrow at 'connect using' and change it to 'direct connect to com 1'
and press OK.

5. At the 'Com 1 Properties' box, change the Bits per Second to 38,400.

6. You should now see a white screen. Type "AT&F" and press the enter key.
If you are in the Sydney Metro area, type "ATX3DT 98998311" and press the enter key.
If you are anywhere else, type "ATX3DT 0298998311" and press the enter key.

7. If you are sucessful in connecting to the IBM BBS, you will see a screen that says " Welcome to the IBM OS/2 Support BBS" .

8. If you see this screen, it means that your modem has successfully negotiated a connection with another modem
and is working properly.

9. You can now disconnect by clicking on the telephone icon on the Hyperterminal Tool bar or by clicking on the
cross at the top righthand corner of the Hyperterminal window.
