Aptiva - How to apply OS/2 Corrective Service Diskettes
Applicable to: United States
The process of applying software updates to the OS/2 operating system can be difficult and confusing, though it need not be. The root of most confusion about the update process is an inconsistent use of names to describe the two types of diskettes used in the update process. In order to provide a clear set of steps for applying updates to OS/2, we first need to define the two types of diskettes used to update OS/2.
Corrective Service Diskettes
The term Corrective Service Diskettes (CSD) is rather broad and often misused and misunderstood. Some use the term to describe all of the diskettes involved in applying a software update to OS/2, while others use the term to mean only the diskettes that contain the actual OS/2 program updates. There are actually two distinct types of diskette packages required to install OS/2 software updates. The first type is the Corrective Service Facility (CSF) which is not the actual software update but rather a tool used to install the update. The second type is the Corrective Service Diskettes (CSD) which contains the OS/2 software update. You must use CSF diskettes to install the CSD updates.
Corrective Service Facility Diskettes
These are two diskettes that you create, similar to OS/2 Utility diskettes, and in turn are used to install the OS/2 updates. The proper name for these two diskettes is Corrective Service Facility (CSF) diskettes. (In the actual installation procedure you may find that one of them is called CSD Boot Diskette 1 instead of a CSF Boot Diskette and may confuse you later when you're prompted to insert CSD Diskette 1.) Their purpose is to install the corrective service update software from the CSD diskettes. Since the CSF version can be updated by IBM at any time and is not tied any particular version of CSD update, always obtain the latest version of CSF before installing OS/2 software updates. Other names you may see used to describe the CSF diskettes, either rightly or wrongly, are:
Kicker
CSF Boot
CSD Boot
CSF Install
CSD Install
Fixpack Install
Corrective Service Diskettes
Corrective Service Diskettes (CSD) make up the actual OS/2 software update files. These files usually cannot be installed without first booting up the system with the CSF diskettes. The CSD diskettes are individually named OS/2 Corrective Service xxxxxx Diskette 1, . . . Diskette 2, and so on, where xxxxx indicates the version of the update files.
You may also see CSD diskettes referred to as Fixpack diskettes. As mentioned above, be aware that the term CSD diskettes, as well as Fixpack diskettes, may sometimes be used incorrectly to describe both the CSD and CSF diskettes as one package. They are separate packages and are not tied together by version.
It's important to remember that there are two essential parts in applying software updates to OS/2. The first part is the CSF tool used to boot the system to OS/2, which then prompts you to insert the actual software update diskettes. The second part consists of the software update diskettes, or CSD's.
In summary:
CSF = Installation tool
CSD = Software fixes and updates
Applying the Corrective Service Diskettes
1. Print and read all documentation or text files that come with the CSF and CSD packages. There are several critical factors that must be considered before starting the CSD installation process.
2. Shut down the system, place the first CSF diskette in the A: drive, and turn the system On.
3. Insert the second CSF diskette when prompted.
4. Follow screen prompts for inserting specific CSD diskettes.
5. At the completion of the installation, remove the last diskette, shut the system down, and reboot.
Note: It cannot be overly stressed that all of the text information that comes with both the CSF and CSD packages needs to be reviewed. There are instructions about how to "back out" an update should you run into problems with the new version of CSD updates. There are also instructions for an alternate method of installing CSD updates, applying the updates to a system with more than one version of OS/2 installed, and installing the updates to several OS/2 systems tied to a network.
