Aptiva - The BUFFERS command
Applicable to: United States
The BUFFERS command is used in the CONFIG.SYS file. The syntax of the statement should be:
BUFFERS=n[,m]
n = specifies the number of disk buffers that the system uses. The minimum number is 1 and the maximum number is 99 (unless you specify the /x parameter, in which case the maximum number is 10,000.)
m = specifies the maximum number of sectors the system can read in advance in processing any input operations. This allows processing to increase in performance for those applications that read and write sequentially. This buffer is called the "look-ahead" buffer. The minimum value is 1 and the maximum is 8. If you do not specify this parameter, no look-ahead buffers are installed.
/X = uses expanded memory for buffer storage (NOTE: Should not be used with any version of DOS above 4.0).
The value of n will remain in effect until the system is restarted with a different value specified in the CONFIG.SYS.
The optimum number of buffers must be determined by you, based on some of the following considerations:
- the types of applications most often used
- the memory installed on your system
- your perception and analysis of system performance when using your applications with different numbers of buffers installed
