Description:
Hard Disk Space is incorrect in the "Microsoft Windows 98 Registration" page.
Models affected:
2158, 2163, and 2164
How to duplicate:
Install Windows 98. The registration page appears with an indicator of hard disk space. It is incorrect.
Root cause:
The Microsoft programmer used the wrong API to get the disk free space.
Interrupt 21h Function36h Get Disk Free Space:
If total or free disk space is greater than 2GB minus 320k, then 2GB minus 320k is returned. This function is superseded by
Int 21h Function 7303h Get_ExtFreeSpace (FAT32).
There is also a Windows 98 FAT32 limitation acting in this case. From MicrosoftÆs Knowledge Base:
NOTE: Although FAT32 supports drives up to 2 terabytes in size, drives may not be larger then 7.8 GB due to limitations of the BIOS INT13 interface.
Workaround:
Ignore the size report and continue using the Next button. Microsoft is aware of this problem but has not promised a fix. Some future update of Windows will correct this problem.
