TP 701, Dock II - Problem installing OS/2 Warp using external floppy drive

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
When the IBM ThinkPad 701C is placed in the IBM Dock II docking station using the adapter kit, users may experience problems if they try and install OS/2 from the external floppy drive which they have to attach to the IBM Dock II. This is relevant to both installing the diskette or CD version of OS/2 V2.11/Warp. The symptoms of the problem is that after booting using the OS/2 Installation diskette, users are asked for diskette 1, as OS/2 loads the device drivers referenced in the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file held on diskette 1 - a message is displayed indication that OS/2 cannot see the hard drive or floppy drive.

CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad 701 installed in a Dock II trying to install OS/2 Warp using the external floppy drive attached to the rear of the docking station.

SOLUTION:
This problem can be easily rectified. The problem is down to a timing dependancy between the IBM ThinkPad 701 and IBM's OS/2 with the floppy diskette drive. The problem can be fixed by editing the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file, and placing a number of parameters on the IBM1FLPY.ADD line as shown below :

BASEDEV=IBM1FLPY.ADD /a:0 /u:0 /CL:AT

By saving the modified CONFIG.SYS file, rebooting the system and then going through the installation process again, this time the error relating to OS/2 not being able to find the hardware should not appear.

Once OS/2 has been installed, you will also need to add the parameters to the IBM1FLPY device driver statement to ensure that timing dependancy is still met. If the device driver for the floppy is not modified then users will receive SYS0039 errors whenever they try and access the floppy diskette drive.
