TP 380,385 - Problems when using preload recovery diskettes
Applicable to: World-Wide
SYMPTOM:
The Thinkpad 380 machines are supplied with Windows 95 recovery CD's. The recovery process requires the user to boot from a recovery diskette. Unfortunately, these diskettes are write-protected with no write-protect tab. This causes the recovery process to fail under certain circumstances. This has been fixed with a newer version of the disk, however some customers who have already received machines may experience this problem.
SOLUTION:
There are three solutions:
1. Copy the recovery diskette onto another floppy diskette which is write-enabled. Use the DISKCOPY command as this will insure the replacement is bootable. Boot from the replacement diskette and proceed with the recovery;
2. Cover the write-protect tab on the original diskette;
3. Download the diskette image (click here to download it now
) from the Internet and create the diskette.
An additional problem, which only occurs on the 380 models, is the error message "Cannot read from X:" (where X: is the CD-ROM drive). The recovery will continue after pressing R(etry) once.
