Aptiva - Downloading into an empty directory
Applicable to: World-Wide
It is good practice to create a new directory in which to download a file, particularly any file that is "zipped" or contains a number of compressed files. Using a new (empty) directory will eliminate mixing the new file with any non-related files when the downloaded file is "Unzipped" or otherwise expanded into its component files. A new directory will also prevent overwriting other files with identical names.
How to make a directory:
Start in the root directory of the C: drive when making a new directory. At the DOS prompt type MD, a space, and the new directory name. For example, to make a directory named NEWFILE, go to the root directory and type:
MD NEWFILE and press [ENTER]
In this example the NEWFILE directory is chosen at the start of the file download process. Once the file has been downloaded and "unzipped" or expanded, if applicable, the new file or files can be copied to other directories, if required.
If you want to remove the NEWFILE directory at some later time, go to the root directory of C: and type:
RD NEWFILE and press [ENTER]
Note: Before you can remove a directory, all files and subdirectories within it must be erased or removed.
