How to use FDISK to check partition size.
Note: FDISK should be used carefully. Improper usage or mistakes can result in unrecoverable data loss.
1. Open a DOS Window or Command Prompt.
- Windows 95 - Click on Start, then Programs, and then MS-DOS Prompt.
- OS/2 - Double click on OS/2 System, and Command Prompts, and then OS/2 Window.
- Windows 3.1x - Exit windows.
2. Type FDISK and press the Enter key.
3. Select option 4 and press the Enter key. If you are running OS/2, the partition information screen is the first screen that is displayed.
4. You should see a list displaying the partitions along with thier sizes in Mbytes.
5. Add up the sizes and they should equal the size of the HDD.
6. Other info here will be Usage, if it adds up to 100% then the entire HDD is being used.
7. Press the Escape key twice to exit FDISK.
Note: DOS uses extended partitions and multiple drive letters may exist in one extended parition. OS/2 does not use this scheme.
1MByte=1048576 byes, it represents a Megabyte or 1K of Kbytes. It should not be confused with millions of bytes.
(e.g. A 2.1GB is only 2014 MBytes (2014*1048576=2,111,832,064.)
