Aptiva - Opening a document automatically when opening a program

Applicable to: United States

Opening a document automatically can save time because the application and document are opened in one step. One way to do this is to associate an extension with a particular application, create a program item for the application in a Program Manager group window, and associate the document with the program item. Follow these steps:

1. Open both Program Manager and File Manager. Make visible both the File Manager directory window containing the document you want to open and the Program Manager group window where the new program item will be placed.

2. In File Manager, highlight the document you want to associate with an application.

3. From the File menu, choose Associate. If the document is already associated with an application, the application name is displayed in the text box. If an association is already in place, click on Cancel and skip to step 6.

4. In the text box, type the path of the application with which you want to associate the document. For example, to associate the selected document with Microsoft Works, you would type the path for Works, such as c:\msworks\msworks.exe

5. Choose OK.

6. Drag the document from the directory window to a Program Manager group window like Applications. Windows automatically creates a program item with the filename of the document and the application's icon.

7. Double-click the new program item to start the application and open the document.

Note: Some Windows applications load into memory each time you double-click a program item even if the application is already loaded. You may want to limit the number of items you open in this manner.
