Aptiva - Why does the CHKDSK or SCANDISK command tell me I have bad sectors?
Applicable to: World-Wide
All disk media is imperfect. The cost of making a fixed disk free of bad sectors would make the machine too expensive to market. As a result, most fixed disks are delivered with more capacity than is advertised in the specifications for the machine. In this way, you are sure to receive the expected capacity even though a small percentage of the fixed disk is unusable. If you run CHKDSK on your system, you may notice that "bytes total disk space" exceeds the stated capacity of your fixed disk for the reasons cited above.
