Aptiva - How to set video resolution and color depth to 640x480x256

This document outlines a procedure for setting Aptiva systems to 640x480 resolution and a color depth of 256 colors. These settings are the minimum for many Windows and OS/2 applications, and some applications may specifically require these settings to operate correctly.
OS/2:

1. At the OS/2 desktop, double click the 'OS/2 System' icon, double click 'System Setup', and then double click the 'System' object.

2. In the 'System' notebook, click the 'Screen' tab (it may already be selected).

3. In the 'Screen Resolution' box, select '640x480x256'.

4. Close the 'System' notebook. You will need to shutdown and restart OS/2 before any changes will take effect.

Windows 3.x:

1. From the Windows Program Manager, double-click the 'AptivaWare' program group, and then double-click the 'Custom Tools' icon.

2. Click 'Display Select' from the Custom Tools menu.

3. If a "Monitor frequency undefined" message appears, click 'OK'.

4. In the 'Monitor Resolution' box, select '640x480'.

5. In the 'Select the Number of Colors' box, select '256'.

6. Click OK.

7. You will need to shutdown Windows and restart the computer for the new settings to take effect.

Windows 95:

For Service Level H and I systems, and 2134/2176 systems with Flex Memory architecture:

1. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, and then double -click the 'Display' icon.

2. The 'Display Properties' screen will appear. Click the 'Settings' tab.

3. Change the color depth by clicking the arrow on the right-hand side of the 'Color Palette' list box. A list of available color depths will be displayed, select '256 Color' from the list.

4. Change the screen area by moving the slider under 'Desktop Area' all the way to the left. You will see '640 by 480 pixels' below the slider.

5. Click OK in the 'Display Properties' Window. If you have changed the color depth, a 'System Settings Change' message box will appear stating that you must restart the computer for the new settings to take effect. Click Yes to restart the computer.

For all 2159, 2161, 2162, 2136, 2137, 2138, 2140, and 2142 models:

1. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, and then double click the 'Display' icon.

2. The 'Display Properties' screen will appear. Click the 'Settings' tab.

3. Change the color depth by clicking the arrow on the right-hand side of the 'Color Palette' list box. A list of available color depths will be displayed, select '256 Color' from the list.

4. Change the screen area by moving the slider under 'Screen' all the way to the left. You will see 'Screen: 640 x 480' above the slider.

5. Move the slider above 'Desktop' all the way to the left as well. You will see 'Desktop: 640 x 480' below the slider.

5. Click Apply. A 'Display Properties' box will appear stating that the display is going to be resized for 15 seconds to test the new settings. Click OK.

6. The desktop will be resized to 640x480. A 'Monitor Settings' windows will appear asking if you want to keep the new settings. Click Yes.

7. Click OK in the 'Display Properties' Window. If you have changed the color depth, a 'System Settings Change' message box will appear stating that you must restart the computer for the new settings to take effect. Click Yes to restart the computer.
