Aptiva - CWAUDIO.BIN "Error Message" Upon Boot-Up

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
When booting the system, the following message may be seen:

* Plug N Play BIOS Detected
* SB Pro: I/O=220, IRQ=5,DMA=1
* Cannot load C:\WINDOWS\cwaudio.bin
* Using default firmware download

This message commonly occurs when the machine comes to the line 'device=c:\windows\cs4232c.exe' in the CONFIG.SYS file.

Solution:
There is no way to keep this message from occurring. It is a normal occurrence for the sound card driver. This is not an error message, but an informational message. The sound card is not impaired in any way.

Explanation:
Each time the cs4232c.exe drivers loads, it performs a check of its firmware. (Firmware is a program contained on a chip called an EEPROM which tells the sound card how to operate.) The driver checks the version of the firmware contained on the EEPROM against the version of the firmware in the cwaudio.bin file. If the version of firmware in the cwaudio.bin file is the same as, or lower than that contained on the EEPROM, the driver will not load cwaudio.bin. This is why the message "Cannot load C:\WINDOWS\cwaudio.bin" is seen.

When the system displays the message "Using default firmware download" is simply means that it will continue to use the version of firmware already present on the EEPROM chip.
