Aptiva - Configuration error 163 at bootup

Applicable to: World-Wide

If you receive an error message at bootup similar to the following:

"The following error was detected when the system was started.

163 Date and Time Incorrect."

You can correct this error by going to the Hardware Configuration Screen to correct the date and time. The message at bootup may suggest pressing [F1] to get to this screen, or it may have taken you there automatically. You can also just press the [F1] key while the wavy box appears in the upper right corner of the screen, or, depending on the system model you have, you can enter the command CONFIGUR at the DOS prompt.

Once you are in the Hardware Config Screen, on some system you page down to the 2nd screen (usually) and locate the Date and Time entries, and on other system you select the Time and Date from the menu selection. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight the entry and type in the current date and time in the respective entry fields. Press the Escape key and reply Yes to save the changes. The system will then continue to boot up to Windows.

Then, exit Windows, shut down the system, and power it on again after about 10-20 seconds to see if the problem goes away. If it does, your system should run OK during the current session, but the problem may re-occur the next day on power up. If it does occur, then this may indicate that there is a problem with the battery in the system unit. Power down the system and check the documentation that came with your system to locate the battery. It may be dislodged, or something may be touching it, which you may be able to correct easily. If nothing is obvious, then you may need to replace the battery. Replacement batteries can often be found at a local electronic parts store, or you can call the IBM HelpWare number, 1-800-772-2227, for information on ordering a new battery or other assistance in diagnosing the problem. PC Direct (1-800-426-2968) or other companies that advertise in computer magazines may also have it in their stock as well.
