Aptiva - Sony CD Extra Sampler video problem/MPEG

Applicable to: United States

The Sony CD Extra Sampler is one place where improperly installed Ram Memory shows up. This system borrows Ram memory for video memory. The other place is in system configuration/setup utility (accessed by pressing <F1> when system boots). Under video information settings, you will see Video Memory Option 1 or 2 Mb is not available and cannot be set. This is part of the UMA (Unified Memory Architecture) your computer's video uses.

On CD Extra Sampler, the video plays only on the right side of the screen appears to be out of sync, and jumping up and down.

To fix the problem:

1. If you have added memory, please remove the memory after turning your computer off. Restart the computer and try
playing the video's again. If the problem reoccurs then confirm the correct locations of the remaining SIMMS on the below chart and then retry the videos.

NOTE: The system memory modules are visible on the left hand side towards the front, 4 sockets. This location and
information on installation is on page 68 of Aptiva Handbook.

2. Please determine which sockets are filled, socket number starts from right to left when facing front of system, socket 1 is far right one. Acceptable combinations are:

Socket

4

3

2

1

From Factory

x

x

Other Combinations

Note: Modules in socket 1 & 2 must have same specs, modules in socket 3 & 4 must have same specs but modules in 1 & 2 do not have to have the same specs as the ones in 3 & 4.

3. If the configuration does not match one of the above ( module in sockets 1, 2 &3 causes the video problem), have them
change, remove and reinsert modules in correct sockets.

4. When they reboot, after replacing cover, have them press <F1> key when screen prompts them to (lower left corner). This will take them to setup utility screen, Main Menu.

5. Using arrow keys, highlight "video information" <ENTER>

6. Use arrow key to highlight "video memory". Amount of memory should be in brackets [ ]. When memory modules wrong, the amount of memory did not have a bracket around it.

7. They can change amount of video memory using left or right arrow key. 2 Mb helps video response, 1 Mb helps system
response/speed, there choice. Key is that brackets or ability to change amount is working.

8. Make change?, press <Esc>" twice and "yes" to save changes. Problem fixed.
