56K ISDN International PC Card Modem with GSM Capability - Unable to get 128k connection

Applicable to: AP-N, AP-S, Canada, EMEA, United States

Symptom:
The modem is installed correctly but is only able to make an ISDN connection at 64K. This is an indication that the modem is using only one of the two B-channels available for a multilink connection that would provide a 128K connection speed.

Configuration:

Solution:
The Dial-Up Networking(DUN) needs to be re-configured. To properly reconfigure do the following:

  1. My Computer
  2. Dial-up networking(folder)
  3. Select the icon for your connection or if not created, create one and select(highlight it)
  4. Under the FILE menu
  5. Properties
  6. General(tab)
  7. The bottom text box "connect using" should have IBM-ISDN1 as the selected device
  8. Multilink(tab)
  9. Select "use additional devices"
  10. Click the add button, and select the IBM-ISDN2 device
  11. Click OK all the way out.
  12. DUN is now configured for multilink and ready to test.

128K connections can be easily demonstrated by using the ISDN diagnostics that were installed from diskette #3. To start the ISDN diagnostics do the following:

  1. Start
  2. Programs
  3. IBM modem
  4. ISDNdiags
  5. Start your connection, or dial the ISDN connection you wish to connect to. The diagnostics 'logging' tab will indicate the progress of the connection. You will see that ISDN(1) has connected, then you should see that ISDN(2) has connected. The presence of both ISDN devices connected is one way to know that your connection is 128K, 64K represented by each ISDN-channel.

Additional Information:
Sometimes it is necessary to re-install DUN to get the ISDN device drivers to operate correctly. To re-installing DUN:
  1. First Dial-Up Networking (DUN) needs to be removed, so click on Start
  2. Settings
  3. Control Panels
  4. Add/Remove Programs(icon)
  5. Windows setup (TAB)
  6. Communications[double click]
  7. Deselect DUN
  8. Click OK all the way out, then reboot.
  9. Now you need to re-install DUN along the same path as above, except, this time select DUN then OK out and reboot.
